A group of 71 farmers finally receive their first payment for a new type of grain called Rice Berry with promises of future proceeds of 11,000 baht per tonne.

Rice berry, a new strain of grain, caused an uproar in the Phitsanulok Bang Rakam district. A group of farmers did not receive payment last year after delivering their harvest to a wholesaler.

The new crop is of premium quality and over 600 tonnes were delivered last year alone.

The group of 71 farmers in total were convinced to grow the new crop with the promise of a high purchase price in return. The farmers did not receive payment after 5 months of delivering the harvest and banded together. Acting as a group, the farmers sought the assistance from the agricultural ministry.

Following the farmer’s plea for assistance, the group has finally received their first down payment for the harvest.

Currently, 200 tonnes of the rice have been sold with a yield of 1.18 million baht thanks to the help of agricultural officials. All of the proceeds were dispersed among the 71 farmers in the group by the chief of the district.

The remaining rice, some 400 tonnes, is currently available. The ministry is hoping to sell the remaining supply at 11,000 baht per tonne. Marketing for the grain should begin in the near future states Direk Yimhoi from the Agricultural Extension Office.

Yimhoi suggest that in the future, farmers should consult with the Agricultural Extension Office before investing in new crops. Assistance, such as marketing and technical issues, can be provided to the farmers.

Rice Berry has been studied by Kasetart University and results indicate that the rice is filled with anti-oxidants and high levels of iron. The new strain of rice was developed in 2012 by Thai scientists in hopes of boasting the local economy and reducing cancer risks due to anti-oxidant levels.

The group of farmers are expected to receive a return on all of their harvest after marketing proceeds.

Good news for a change. thumbsup.gif

Well done to the 71 farmers for growing this new crop, agricultural ministry for following with the harvest payments, and the Agricultural Extension Office for marketing the grain, and assisting with technical issues.

If Rice Berry is as good as its being claimed, I will definitely only buy this rice in future.

We grow this stuff since last year and its absolutely delicious. A black rice grain with flowery and nutty flavor. 11.000 baht a tonne is dirt cheap as we get at least 60 baht per kilogram (organic). This sort of rice will be a premium export product soon. Rice berry is a combination of 3 rice strains and has similar anti-oxidant properties as blue berries. Make sure you buy organic though. Prices vary between 120 and 180 baht a kilogram in better supermarkets at this moment.

I bought a kilogram for 70 baht at the Lampang weekend night market a couple weeks ago. The label says it was grown in Lampang so I guess thats why it was so cheap, I imagine someplace like Villa in Bangkok probably charges a fortune for it.

And yes, it is delicious.

whistling.gif Yeah, sure.

i predict that within 2 years, 3 years at the most. the farmers who grow this will find themselves as badly off as they were before this "miricle" crop.

If it truely does pay that well, oher farmers will soon grow it also.

That will result in a glut, and the oversupply will bring prices down to 10% or 20% of what they are now.

And the money the farmers borrowed to start growing this new crop ...... and the intrest the farmers will have to pay on that money .... will soon have to be repiaid as well as the Loans the farmers now can't afford to repay, will still be due.

And the rich people who loaned will the money to the farmrs wil just get richer (as they planned) while the poor farmers will just get poorer (as it was planned they would).

That's what "Capitalism" is all about.
