renewing british passport and visa at the same time

Hi,

I have to renew my British passport as it expires in July. I have an appointment with the British passport office in BKK at the end of February but apparently it takes about 6 weeks minimum to get it back. The problem is that my visa expires at the end of March.

What happens in this situation? I have read that you need at least 6 months to apply for a visa renewal, but I'll only have about three and a half. I can't leave the country while my passport is being renewed but I'm not allowed to stay without a visa and they won't give me that without a new passport.

Would they be good enough to give me a renewal as long as they know I have a new passport on its way?

Or will I have to leave before my visa expires and not apply for a new passport?

Anyone have any experience of this situation?

You can apply for your extension with your current passport.

You will be given about three and a half months.(The validity left on your passport)

When you get your new passport apply again and get 12 months.

Assuming you are talking about extensions at an Immigration Office of course.

Too late now but you should have got a new passport months ago.

There have been reports of it taking less time to get the passports now. Some as quick as about 3 weeks.

What kind of visa do plan on renewing. Visas are not renewed you have to apply for a new one at an embassy or consulate.

If the OP has pages left in the passport then the option still exists to get a free one year UK passport extension.

It's not accepted that many places, but it's fine for an in-country extension.

You make an appointment to apply at the British Embassy in Bangkok, not the BKK passport agency (VFS/Trendy).

I've just got mine back, less than 2 weeks and all done. I was very surprised.

The problem is that my visa expires at the end of March.

Are you talking about your permission to stay on a (tourist , non-imm O or whatever) visa entry or an extension of stay based on retirement, marriage or ...?

Visas are not renewed.

This means I will only get 9is months extention. Is it possible to renew the passport 12 months in advance of the expiry date, or should I leave it until the end of this year?

You can renew your UK passport whenever you care.

You get up to 9 months of credit for unused validity. so if you applied today, you would get a passport valid for 10 years and 9 months.

Thanks for the responses people, it seems that a passport extension is by far the most sensible option.
