Second Hand Books (in German)

Featured Replies

A friend of mine passed away recently and his widow asks me what to do with all his books (mostly in German). Mostly hardcover, and non fictional.

Is there a second-hand Bookstore in BKK that would be interested in taking them in?

As I gather, they pay per Kilo. smile.png

Maybe someone can help. THX & cheers.

It may be advisable to check each book. There might be some valuable volumes among them (although I doubt it), because you say they're mostly hardcover and non-fiction. Would be a shame to sell a rare volume basically for scrap paper just because of sheer ignorance.

As a tongue-in-cheek remark, I gather his widow is Thai, as in "oblivious to the cultural value of books"? Or am I mistaken?

If you would take the time to compile at least a list of titles and their publishing year, I could give you a much clearer picture if there are any volumes among the collection that are worth more than a couple of Baht.

Try Dasa Books in Sukhumvit , just down from Emporium. They have a good selection of books other than English on the top floor.

Also i understand there is a Goethe Institute in Bangkok that may be worthwhile contacting to see if they are interested.

I tried Dasa once with some very good quality hard cover non fiction books but what they offered was so pathetic I gave them to the British Council who were holding a charity fair at the time. My guess is that you may have to do the same, the Goethe Institute seems like good advice.

I tried the Goethe Institute. They are not interested. But by going thru the book-inventory, I may have found a jewel.

Actually found an original "Mein Kampf" by a certain Adolf Hitler, printed in the 1930ies. In mint condition.

I recommended to the widow, that she should not sell this one per weight.smile.png

Cheers.

If Goethe Institute isn't interested, you might see if a Thai university or international school library is interested.

So I gather are not Deutsch/Schwyz. As you use BKK-forum, I also assume you are in this area.

2nd handbookstores are also disappearing by the week-they are not interested anymore in buying old stuff, nor do they do that by the kg (thats more for scrapmerchants). The first thing they do is look at the print-year-anything over 10 yrs old is not for them.

IF you can handle german language, I advise you to post on german Thai-info fora, like thalandforum//en.de -there are more, 3 are most used, google will find them easily.
