I use the most simple type. The transparent 10 inch housings.

This is the size if you want to connect to 1/2 inch pipes:

http://www.duan-daw.com/product/254/%E0%B8%81%E0%B8%A3%E0%B8%B0%E0%B8%9A%E0%B8%AD%E0%B8%81%E0%B8%81%E0%B8%A3%E0%B8%AD%E0%B8%87%E0%B8%99%E0%B9%89%E0%B8%B3-housing-%E0%B9%83%E0%B8%AA-10-%E0%B8%99%E0%B8%B4%E0%B9%89%E0%B8%A7-%E0%B8%A3%E0%B8%B9%E0%B9%80%E0%B8%81%E0%B8%A5%E0%B8%B5%E0%B8%A2%E0%B8%A7-4-%E0%B8%AB%E0%B8%B8%E0%B8%99-pett

To connect to 3/4 inch pipes use this:

http://www.duan-daw.com/product/255/%E0%B8%81%E0%B8%A3%E0%B8%B0%E0%B8%9A%E0%B8%AD%E0%B8%81%E0%B8%81%E0%B8%A3%E0%B8%AD%E0%B8%87%E0%B8%99%E0%B9%89%E0%B8%B3-housing-%E0%B9%83%E0%B8%AA-10-%E0%B8%99%E0%B8%B4%E0%B9%89%E0%B8%A7-%E0%B8%A3%E0%B8%B9%E0%B9%80%E0%B8%81%E0%B8%A5%E0%B8%B5%E0%B8%A2%E0%B8%A7-6-%E0%B8%AB%E0%B8%B8%E0%B8%99-fast-pure

They actually have adapters for 1/2 inch or 3/4 inch.

The width at the housing ("4" or "6") is one of the strangest units I have ever seen:

http://www.thai-language.com/id/149308

"hun": [a unit of Chinese linear measure equal to approximately] .09375 of an inch

linear measure equal to 1.5 of 1/16th of an inch cheesy.gif

Both sell for 316 Baht.

Nice price at the home stores: 990 and up blink.png

Got any links for online retailers for filter cartridges?

Should I have mentioned that they are in Thai language only whistling.gif

(probably you need some help to fill in the adress details)

I did payment in advance by online payment.

Some might hesitate, but for a couple of hundred Baht I take the "risk".

Worked perfect last time when I ordered 20 pcs of 10 inch cartridges.

This type:

PP-1005C PP 10" 2.5" 5 Colandas 22

PP = polypropylene

Lenght 10 inch

Caliber 2.5 inch

5 micron denseness (whats the word?)

Colandas brand

22 Baht each

A standard sediment cartridge which they quote more than a 100 Baht in the local home store (identical product).

A pack of 50 pcs cost 1000 Baht. This is what I will order next time, as I have to pickup the shipment at the post office anyway.

The motorcycle postman does not deliver "big" packages.

I selected shipment by EMS, more than 100 Baht or so.

For such a package one could well do without special shipment?

http://www.duan-daw.com/category/28/%E0%B9%84%E0%B8%AA%E0%B9%89%E0%B8%81%E0%B8%A3%E0%B8%AD%E0%B8%87%E0%B8%99%E0%B9%89%E0%B8%B3/%E0%B9%84%E0%B8%AA%E0%B9%89%E0%B8%81%E0%B8%A3%E0%B8%AD%E0%B8%87%E0%B8%81%E0%B8%A3%E0%B8%AD%E0%B8%87%E0%B8%95%E0%B8%B0%E0%B8%81%E0%B8%AD%E0%B8%99-sediment

Thanks a bunch for this.

I was thinking of splashing out the cash to buy reusable ones, but disposable's at this price definitely changes that equation

FYI, I ordered the pack of 50, yep just the same as the ones in HomePro or Global at a fraction of the price. The standard shipping (the ฿100 option) works great, received it upcountry in 3 days, so I don't think the EMS option is worth the extra couple of hundred.

On a side note, my mail man even managed the package on his motorbike LOL

If the problem is suspended solids such as silt, a simple filter will be sufficient.

If it is hard water, i.e. high in calcium and magnesium salts, you have two choices:

1/ Buy a water softener cartridge, which replaces the calcium and magnesium ions with sodium.

2/ Only use sulphonate or nonionic surfactants in the washing machine. These are not affected by hard water. Soaps will form insoluble scum with calcium and magnesium in hard water.

As previously posted, if it is difficult to work up a lather with bar soap, it's very likely you have hard water.

For option 1, where are these available in Thailand? I'm only familiar with tank-type water conditioners from the USA, but assume these are something less cumbersome? Perhaps just replacing a cartridge in a casing?

For option 2, can you advise any Thai brands of sulphonate or non-ionic surfactants?

My problem is hard water, i get through a new 35,000 Baht washing machine every 5 years

You need a "Catalytic water conditioner" I sold thousands in Australia, a compact 10 or 15 mm unit (dependant on flow) will do the job , A good one was from CARE FREE conditioners in Wagga wagga Aust . (Google for info)!

Or make your own from old Copper car radiators.

Again, being from the US, I'm not familiar with "Wagga wagga," but from googling, it appears they are an inline device in the water line. How often do they need replacing/servicing? Are "catalytic water conditioners" available in Thailand?

If you only need to remove the crud, then use a sediment filter, they sell them at Homepro. Smallish blue made by Filtrex. They have four replacement sediment filter cartridges. The filter itself is pretty cheap as I recall, couple of thousand, and the replace cartridges are ~฿300 each or you can buy reusable ones too.

I am looking for something just like this. Is it acceptable to put this before our tank which supply the whole house?

Though we only really need it for clothes washing purposes. Our clothes get permanently stained (little black spots) every once in a while. Would this one do the job for that. I presume it's crud, but don't really know.

Yeah, they go before the tank directly to the incoming water supply. The topic from the OP was just about his washing machine, but water here in general is so dirty you really need for all water in the house. remember you wash, shower probably even cook with it and without a sediment filter the crud is in it all the time. My village water is nasty, six weeks and the filters are literally black, which if you think about it was what used to go directly into the house.

Next month I'll take some pic's of the filters when I change them

Finally got a filter fitted but I only got a single filter cartridge as a test but this happened immediately per photo - does the filter simply become ineffective once fully filtered or is it best to remove whilst awaiting replacements. Btw, on another (excellent) thread you said you were going to try washable filters, how did they work? Many thanks.

edit - could be costly if mine are full of crud as soon as they're attached! Brown water is problem for the whole town, we're in a rented townhouse, no access to the pipes except for where taps are at the wall.

@elliotm: Does the water still flow? If yes, the filter is still good, if no, you really do have a serious water quality problem, and you probably want to look into a filter that can be backwashed.

As said filter should still work until blockage makes water flow too low - do not know what type of filter that has but on my drinking water filters can remove and clean surface with Scotch-Brite pad a few times to restore flow as most of crude will be on the surface and easily removed. Normally a caution to never use soap but in this case probably not an issue - but really not required to restore flow.

This is the system I have and it seems to work fine, if you are connecting that filter shown direct to the mains water supply you are going to be using a lot of replacement elements.
