Farangs need to pass "Thainess" course to get teacher license

Long distance dead beat dads have little of worth to offer their kids least of all their demonstrable ignorance of contemporary successful ELT methodologies. Nor do some deluded posters here seem to understand that 30000 baht is not a gravy train salary. It's a pittance.

Sure it is a pittance, and there is a reason they pay this,,,They know for a good English teacher that also can converce in Thai they would be paying

35 40 k pounds per year.

The gravy train is being able to stay in the kingdom without to much trouble. And, well, the rest we all know

Guess the problem here is academic unemployment in the West.

Farangs that have a BA only have it hard to get a teacher's job in thr West, so they try in Thailand because life is cheaper there.

So they try to take away teacher's jobs from Thais.

The Golden Rule of any country in the world is:

Foreign only if natives are not qualified for the job.

As far as I can see, many Thais can speak perfect English, so they are first choice, of course.

I doubt many Thais have TEFL qualifications as it is normally a requirement to be a native English speaker. That's the point of it.

Any Thai who has near perfect English, IELTS band 9, would not be teaching but probably doing translation work for the UN or big business. Re the silly comment about teaching English in England by mcmid. People already speak English there so do not require EFL teachers. Specialist ELT trainers travel all round the world teaching English except when they teach multilingual classes in the UK in which case they would present the classes in English.

OK manic,

if you come from West London: would you be able to teach Queen's English to cockneys?

Cockneys can already speak English. Accent is immaterial.

So there we have it,,, Do you say,,,,, You know what i mean mate, after every sentence? Bet you do ! poor Thai schools can tell the difference

I can just imagine. Little Korn comes home after school, after one of your lessons, and says Mom I am just going up the apples and pears as i need

a piss,you know what i mean?

Accent is every thing Prxxk Why do so many have elocution lessons later in life???? Becuse of teachers like you, know what i mean?

Mic mid you are out of your depths with this subject as with others subjects. You are floundering. The Queens English as you call it is nowadays referred to as RP and is not considered very useful for the development of listening skills as most people speak English with a foreign accent. That is one important skill EFL teachers provide. The teaching of listening skills to enable students to understand a wide range of accents in differing situations.

Ah two soul mates wallowing in mutual ignorance. But you are both a bit silly I think and maybe you should try and learn from forums like this rather than repeat endlessly your own views which seem based on predudice and ignorance in the face of many people here trying to inform you and help you come to a better understanding of current ideas in

language learning and teaching in relation to cultural sensitivity: the original subject of this post. Not for the first time on threads here on TV you have hijacked them and tried to vandalise the discourse.

Some Thais speak good English. VERY few of them become teachers in Thai government schools.

The level of English among Thai English teachers in government schools is horrendous. Most of them can not speak English beyond a very basic level. Many actively avoid foreigners since they can not communicate with them and want to avoid losing face. My ex girlfriend is a Thai English teacher, we spoke Thai when we were together as it was too difficult to communicate in English. And she was the best at English in her school.

A few teachers are able to communicate decently, a school will usually have that one interact with foreigners that come, in order to hide that the other 30 teachers at the school are unable to communicate at any reasonable level. Because they can not speak English, the average lesson from a Thai teacher will involve them lecturing in Thai for an hour about some useless grammatical detail and writing a few words on the board. It is no wonder that most Thais graduate from high school, after a decade studying English, and are still unable to respond to even basic questions. The average bar girl that has been working for a few years speaks better English than the average Thai English teacher. Although admittedly her grammar will be awful, she will be far better at basic communication.

A BA is sufficient to teach English in EVERY country in Asia except for Thailand. You can teach the rest of your life in Japan, Korea, or China armed with a BA in any subject and a passport from an English speaking country. Japan, Korea, and even China all pay FAR more than Thailand does, so it is no surprise that teachers are now leaving Thailand in droves for these other countries. These countries are serious about learning English. Schools in Thailand right now are scrambling for teachers, it is getting very difficult for them to get a foreign teacher at all, let alone a native speaking with experience. As a result, most students will have NO ONE in their school that they are able to practice speaking English with.

I'm about as far away from being a cockney as you could be! But I do know quite a lot about TEFL which you obviously don't. Nevertheless your trollish and increasingly amusing (for their stupidity) comments are doing wonders for keeping this thread going.

Just another bullshit hoop they expect us to jump through. The schools are already struggling to find native English speaking teachers. They should do away with the TCT it has no interest in education just in making themselves 'look' important, implementing ridiculous requirements and in justifying their positions. If they really had any brain cells they would create a standard nation wide curriculum with lesson plans included for English teachers to follow, they could allow a time margin in which the teachers could apply their own methods of teaching or expand on what was taught. They should do away with the TCT course requirement and replace the requirement for a degree with an English proficiency test (A degree in 'sports science' for example doesn't mean your English is any good). It could then be the school's responsibility to monitor the performance and competency of that teacher which could then be reported back to the TCT if need be.

Thailand, land of incompetent leaders and 'too scared to rock the boat' subordinates.

Thailand, land of incompetent leaders and 'too scared to rock the boat' subordinates.

Truer words have NEVER been spoken.

Thailand will NEVER stop being a third world country and the way it's going it might fall from that platform as well. But only MO. :-)
