BANGKOK: -- BANGKOK RESIDENTS may be able to utilise a new walkway and park areas along the Chao Phraya River by the end of 2017, city governor MR Sukhumbhand Paribatra said yesterday.

The project area covers both sides of the river from the Rama VII Bridge to the Pinklao Bridge and is 14 kilometres long totally.

The committee responsible for the project held its first meeting yesterday. The project is a response to the government's policy for riverside public-use developments that was given to the city in last December. The Interior Ministry was the project host while the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) acted as project secretary.

Yesterday's meeting was attended by representatives of Wat Rachathiwat Ratchaworawiharn, the Crown Property Bureau, the Treasury Department, the Royal Navy, the Department of Rural Roads, the Marine Department, the Department of Public Works and Town and Country Planning, riverside hotel business operators, the Association of Siamese Architects and BMA departments.

Sukhumbhand, who presided over the meeting, said it was designed to give all the representatives a chance to voice their opinions and suggestions on the project, and share their concerns about possible negative impacts.

He said the feedback would be tabled at the next meeting to determine the project's study and design guidelines while also trying to identify solutions to the possible impacts. A government-level committee would then consider the project.

Sukhumbhand said the project would return public space to the people and boost their participation in taking care of this kind of space.

He said the city would hire a consultancy firm to study, survey and design the project and a construction company to build it - all of which would be completed by January.

The construction is slated to take about 720 days for a late-2017 launch.

Surely "walkway" should read "motorcycle path", as that's what I fear it will become. sad.png

Good idea if it works though, and for which the BMA should be lauded.

It's now February 20th. That's 20 days after their deadline and, guess what, there's no design for the project.

If you read the story again, I think you'll see that it's from next January.

HaHaHa --- another good idea aimed for people and some politician sold-out to motorcycle commuters (to include motorcycle taxi drivers) for a price.

Maybe the access should include a turn-style device which controls access normally at entrance/exit points for mass transit locations (i.e. subway trains stations,...).
