BANGKOK: -- Highway officer dies after truck fells on his patrol car in a collision

A highway police officer was killed and another injured when a container truck rammed at the rear of a parked cement truck and fell on his patrol car on the Bang Pa-in - Bang Buathong road in Samkhok district of Pathumthani province today.

Killed was Pol Sgt Bodin Wongsawang, while the I just was Pol Sub Lt Narongsak Budhisarn.

Driver of the cement truck Pornpirom Kaeodamsai said the highway police waved at him to pull over while he was driving on the highway. As he was talking to one officer sitting in the car on the left, the container truck didn’t notice his parked cement truck and rammed at the rear.

The truck slid and fell on the patrol car trapping the two officers inside.

One was killed and another was rescued by rescue workers.

The truck driver was later arrested for reckless driving.

Now it seems it started raining trucks on the roads.

Up to now I was being very careful when driving from left, right, front, behind.

My sincere condolences to his family but I can't help but thinking that if he and all of his colleagues did a better job of enforcing traffic laws instead of just profiting from them, that perhaps there is a chance that this tragic accident might never have happened in the first place?

I recall reading a few years back about a motorcycle mechanic that was test-driving a bike "at a high rate of speed" in Pattaya that ran into a cement truck head-on. He died at the scene.

Article went on to say that he was driving against the traffic flow, with no helmet, looking at the gear shifter near his foot when it happened.

Cement truck driver fled the scene.

That's one way I've read about on how to "not see a cement truck".

Couldn't see past his TV screen/buddha amulets/photos/figurines/stickers/lights on his front windshield.

If they didn't stop traffic on highways to earn a few thousand Baht a day, I'd have sympathy. However, I don't. They cause more crashes and near misses than necessary, and add to the annual tally of death numbers. There are weigh-in centres to check all, so use them!

So the truck fell I have driven for more years than I care to remember on the UK and Thai roads and have seen many accidents but never seen a lorry fell is this a world fist or is it a Thai excuse for bad drivers.

Those highway potrol officers do a wonderful job and it is sad to read this article. They helped us out when we got a flat tyre on the way to Bangkok.

Always sad when a life is lost.

But and there is always a but. these sort of accidents do not happen in the western world.

Road works or police checks in the west have signs and traffic cones at least half a mile before the stopping places.

Here you get 3 or 4 cones and a police officer standing in front of you waving you in. No distance required.

They have only themselves to blame.

So very true - tragic accident and sad for the officers Family but I am convinced that RTP are responsible for the way this insane driving in Thailand - if RTP just tried to do their job and enforce the traffic-law many of these accidents would never happen but the maniac-drivers know that nothing will happen to them

Yet again the impossible happens in the "land of smiles"

i NEARLY RAN INTO THE BACK OF A CEMENT truck parked in the middle of a laneway in Pattaya a few years. It was night time, the truck had 6 tail lights and none where working, it was old and rusty with cement grey all over the back and I didn't see it till the wife started up!

Unfortunately the police don't bother to take action in regard to many of these defective vehicles which is a shame.

This implies , to me , that the cement truck pulled up along side the police car------thus probably BLOCKING the left hand lane( with the police car blocking the hard shoulder) ----

The driver of the cement truck should have pulled over ONTO the hard shoulder either behind or in front of the police car. This thai habit of just stopping and blocking a lane is the true cause of the accident.

No proper driver training, no proper law enforcement,no consideration of other road users. T I T

probably a typo error the driver saw the truck but didnt realise it was stopped, and then it was too late, as is the case so many times on brits roads,and on roads all over the world. to total negligence, driving without due care and attention, RIP.

He probably was speeding with an overloaded truck so he couldn't break in time. See it happening almost every day.

Also the policemen park their cars at dangerous spots, bet they didn't have training for that. They even stand on the middle! of the highway at night where many cars drive with tanned windows.

That's thainess, we call it down syndrome.
