Showing Proof of Funds to Immigration - question about what they need!

Featured Replies

hi all,

I've read in the forums that as long as you have 10-20k baht, airport immigration will let you enter on a 30-day visa exempt entry (even if you have had multiple entries in the recent past using visa exempt).

However, would it be possible that they would want to see a bank statement showing your total bank balance? And if so, would a simple printout (showing total funds/recent bank balance, etc) from my online banking be sufficient? Or would they want an official letter from my bank?

Thanks so much! I just want to be prepared, just in case...

They normally want to see the equivalent of 10k or 20k baht in cash.

The bank statement would be good to show as proof you have funds from abroad to prove you are not working here.

hi Ubonjoe,

Thanks for the reply. In regards to the bank statement - would a standard printout of my bank balance be sufficient? Or would they want an official letter from my bank stating how much funds I have?

A statement would be enough. No need for a letter.

I recommend to the OP that if he wants to be on the safe side, he brings cash not statements with him.

That said, he will not be asked for anything at the airport.

hi Paz and Ubonjoe - Ok, thank you. Yes, I plan on bringing both cash and a recent bank statement....just in case! Maybe I am overprepared, haha.

Probably the most practical option would be to bring the equivalent of 20,000 THB cash in your local currency with you and then change this into THB (although doing this at the airport would be more expensive than at a regular bank here). Would certainly be cheaper (and definitely less risky) than sticking your foreign credit/debit card into an ATM for cash here. Also probably cheaper than changing cash from your local currency into THB in your home country.

I have entered Thailand for for the last 7 years virtually every month, on a tourist visa exempt, and have never been asked any thing about funds.

I travel on an Australian passport, perhaps other nationalities have different requirements.

Proof of funds is never asked for, unless they are suspicious about you. It is being asked of people making back to back entries into Thailand without a visa and suspected of working in Thailand.

21x to Thailand by flight, lots and lots of Visa Runs, and Tourist Visa's many many, I have NEVER been asked for anything to do with my Finantial Status...I'm a Yank if that matters.

I travel in and out every 28days and have never been asked any questions about funds or anything else.

You don't need anything they will not even ask but if your worried just bring cash 20K is only $ 700.00 US . also a bank statement is ok.

Thai Immigration will never ask for money at the airport to approve entry on a Tourist Visa, as long as your passport is valid and from an 'aaproved' Country (Aus, USA, UK) - it is automatic.

Unless of course you are on a watch list - previously deported or criminal offences etc.

That being said - drive carefully or another type of Thai 'official' may ask for some money while you are here biggrin.png

And if they do, just pay up and move on - do not argue and get abusive (maybe negotiate a little) - you do NOT want to visit the local lock-up.

If you want to be water proof about your bank statement then ask your bank to sign and stamp your statement with the current date. With all kind of software one can even make a wonderful statement for himself.

An example when I want to extend my retirement visa they always ask for the original letter from the embassy with signature and signed by them. They never accept a copy.

better safe than sorry.
