Travelling to Malaysia and back to Thailand with an Emergency travel doc.

I've had my passport stolen and have an appointment at the British Embassy next week to submit my application for a replacement passport (which is probably going to take 2 months to process) and to apply for an Emergency Travel Document which I can apparently get the same day. I have flights booked to Malaysia on the same evening but have now been told by the Embassy's consular section that I will need a visa for Malaysia which will take 2 or 3 days and a visa to get back into Thailand which will take 3 to 4 days.

Does anyone know different? I thought that the object of the EDT was to allow travel between countries in such an emergency.

Of course I can't get anyone on the phone and I live in KP which doesn't help

That is not the information they provide airlines and you can check that at

It seems UK passport holders get special treatment from Malaysia.

For Malaysia

- Holders of emergency or temporary passports.
Visa required, except for A max. stay of 3 months for holders
of British passports.

And for Thailand you can stay 30 days with UK temp passport coming from Malaysia without visa. So probably need to obtain a visa for return trip.

I asked the Embassy why I needed the visa and this is the reply.

Emergency Travel Document (ETD) is the temporary passport, due to Malaysian Immigration policy, they are not allowed the British citizen holding the ETD travelling in the country without the visa. Please check the visa information with Malaysian Embassy before travelling again, please contact Tel 02 629 6800.

Yours sincerely,

This was part of the previous e-mail re returning to Thailand

After you receive the ETD, you need to get the new visa stamp for the Thai Immigration. Therefore you have to plan to submit the ETD application before your travelling at least 3-4 days
