If you are currently staying in Thailand based on your job, the last day of employment is the day you have to leave the country. If you want you can apply for a 60 day extension of stay when cancelling your permission to stay.

You can apply for a 1 year extension of stay based on your Thai wife and childen, but must show an income of 40,000 a month (can be from abroad) OR show 400,000 baht in aThai bankaccount in your name only.

If you don't meet thse criteria, you can visit the Thai consulate in Savanahet (Laos) and apply for a multiple non-O visa there, giving you 90 day entries.

You could go to Savannakhet Laos to get a multiple entry non-o visa based upon marriage. The visa would allow unlimited 90 day entries for a year.

You can also apply for a 60 day extension at immigration to visit you wife. You could do this on the date your job ends by showing a letter from the company stating your employment has ended on that date.

obviously although you think you have given all the info required to answer your question - you have actually said very little

age - current visa status - occupation - resident where - pending pensions - how much money you have currently - your preference (what you would like to happen)

The money must be seasoned for 60 days, so you could first apply for a 60 day extension and at the end of that apply for a 1 year extension of stay.

In order to a apply for a one year extension based upon marriage the 400k baht has to be in the bank for 2 months. Is there any chance your employer could give you the 400k baht a few days before the job ends.

If not the 60 day extension would not give you enough time. It would be best to go out for a single entry non-o visa based upon marriage.

I would go with the savannakhet multi non O based on marriage, easily obtained if have all papers in order & no proof of financials needed. Minimal cost & minimal official hassle.

A one year extension costs 1900 baht verses 5000 baht for a multiple entry visa. Plus the cost of going to get the visa and expenses after you get there.

Also the cost making border runs every 90 days for a new entry.

I cannot see the minimal official hassle either. Dealing with immigration once a year. Verses crossing a border every 90 days to leave the country, then immigration in and out for the other country and then back to here dealing with immigration again. Plus dealing with an embassy or consulate for the visa.

I have done 7 extensions of stay based upon marriage and have found it not to be that big a problem to do them. Certainly much better that a multiple entry non-o visa.

i will be getting paid on the 25th but my contract does not end until 31st and then they are going to do a 6 day extension to try and get my self in order

Being paid on the 25th and being unemployed on the 31st will give you enough time to season the money.

Jut have the papers from your employer for work permit cancellation at labour office and immigration stating that your job terminates the 31st.

You might even get lucky and find a new job within those 60 days.

Still have to deal with reports plus main issue of fund requirement to start the one year extension, you pay additional costs on Changwattana visit too plus more personal details required on marriage status etc, I personally prefer the flexability of a multi entry & trips out of thailand.

All in cost inc Visa can be 7,500baht from Savannakhet which is good for 15months & process is very smooth currently with no financial details required. Different people have different preferences but if OP has trouble organising funds in time it could be easy option.

Good luck on finding another job so that you can stay with your family.

The b400k 2 months has to be in YOUR thai bank account, not joint. Then applying for a support thai wive visa isn't so difficult.

Ration your money for as many months as possible. Be busy applying for jobs. Dont feel pressured to take the first job that comes along unless its decent or you'll be no better off.

Good luck..don't panic, just work your way through the problem, another bus will be along soon.

I have been in similar situations to yours perhaps three times in my life and one thing it has taught me is that you start applying for jobs immediately because of the "lag time".

Get a list of all the agencies who deal with the oil and gas industry and put together a good looking CV and get it to them ASAP. Use whatever means necessary to get in touch with them – – phone, Internet, SMS whatever, however contact is what needs to be made and of course a professional CV to follow the initial contact.

Once you have done that, follow them up again because believe it or not, your CV will go on file along with many others and it is only when you are constantly "top of mind" for them that something will happen.

In addition, your activities will give you a sense of "doing something" and to a certain extent being in charge of your own destiny, rather than sitting and hoping and waiting.

I have a friend in the same industry and although he is based here, he is considering working in Argentina because jobs are not easy to come by these days.

Stay positive, keep looking for ways to be in front of the folk who make the decisions in the industry, and the best of luck to you.

Oil and gas sector offshore has had a worldwide crash. Anyone in the industry knows itcwill be a while before it kicks off again. There is literally tens of thousands out of work. Suggesting getting straight onto a job because of lag time doesnt cut the mustard. The jobs are as scarce as rocking horse shit. And before the " how do you know " brigade comes about I am laying in bed now on a drillship off Durban.

By the way good luck with your future. Hope all goes well for youand your family. This crash came in so fast it caught many unaware. I have been in the industry for over 20 years and been through slow downs and small crashes. Know one seen this big one coming. Hopefully will start to pick up first quarter next year

I don't know the specific answer but others have told you. I just want to wish the best for you and your family.

Cheers.

THB 1.6 million may sound like quite a lot but it doesn't last long in Thailand when you have a wife and 2 kids to support if you want a reasonable living standard.

You don't say if are being laid off from the offshore industry. If you work offshore now you will know it is harder now than it has been for years to get a job offshore due to the current oil price.

Using the money to move your family back to the UK, even if only until you find new employment isn't an option you'd consider???

its just under 2million now and i did look at the option of going back to UK they offered me a job because they thought they had to but it was about 15,000 GBP less than what i get now plus i would not get redundancy so i would go back with nothing i have no property in UK either and its is an umbilical company but i work offshore when there is nothing happening in the factory have been doing offshore work for about 14 years

and yes it won't last long kids school to pay for mortgage car payments it will go but i have to try i won't put my family at risk i will know when to quit.

In order to get a multiple entry non-o visa you would need to be the legal father of your children by way of legitimization.

I found myself in a very similar situation a few years ago when I was almost wiped out in the financial crash. Thailand is a scary place to be in such circumstances.

I chose

to go home. Maybe not the best decision of my life, but absolutely certainly the wisest.

Five years on, my wife is a British citizen and loves living here

, my kids are doing great in school, and I am greatly relieved to have that bit of security which is our birthright as Brits.

No regrets mate. I'd say come home.

Make sure you get the massive tax free allowance for Redundancy payments!

Most Thai accountants don't even know about it! You need a special form. I can't recall the details, someone here should know them, but its something like US$15-20,000 tax free!
