Looking for App or program like a Talking dictionary in English

Featured Replies

Hi

I would like a program or app that would speak a word that you put in it ,

American English or British English,

just something simple like input " specified " and it will speak it,

or drag a pointer over a word and it speaks it ,

I would think Google would have something like this but could not find it ,

Thanks for your help

PS....even better if it was also with thai instructions but without OK

Try Google translate app. It seems to work quite well, but does not yet speak Burmese.

Google translate smartphone app speaks but not all languages. Which language are you looking for? Thai? I think it does Thai.

looking for Thai and English

English because many people know words in English but not how to pronounce the word correctly,

or if they see a word they can type it in and see how it sounds,

We were taught phonics when we were kids and worked unknown words out by knowing the sounds of the letters,

Here is seems to be "learn a word" and the "sound:" of the word but not how to use that information to speak an unknown word....

So if Google translate app works that is great ,

When I went to France years ago , I could work out words but how it was pronounced by the French was not close to what I would have said !

The Google translate app speaks (only) when online (while the dictionary/translation function works also offline).

It speaks English of course and Thai (female voice).

Click to hear "specified":

The Thai version is not 100% waterproof. There are some delicate syllables where it spells/reads wrong.

Listen for sawatdi khrap (spoken by a female voice biggrin.png ):

Thanks.....I wish Google translate also worked offline even if it was a big file to download and store ,

I am mostly interested in the English as I am amazed at how bad pronunciation is for Uni graduates , and this is a good app to have ,

Are there any Hacks to download one language at a time ?

If you only want a talking dictionary (single words) for English, then there are probably better options.

Just Google for "talking dictionary app" and have a try,

There are also "Talking dictionaries" available in most shopping malls etc in Thailand, which will play an audio file for English words, which can be searched via English or Thai (And I think via other languages like Chinese etc as well, but I think that depends on the model).

Also I'd imagine that there would be numerous mobile apps and computer programs which can do something similar, some might even be available for free.

The Google Translate app let's you download selected languages for offline use. Tap on Menu > Settings > Manage offline languages

The single biggest problem in communication is the illusion that it has taken place

Merriam-Webster has this Android app: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.merriamwebster&hl=en

The British dictionaries I use do not have an app, but I have bookmarked their URLs and on the phone and tablet they automatically load with the mobile version:

www.oxforddictionaries.com

dictionary.cambridge.org

All three have a loudspeaker icon to listen to the pronunciation. The Cambridge dictionary has separate icons for UK and US English.
