EyesWideOpen
I don't know why they're picking on the models. - they just wear (or not) what they're told. If they want paid they don't have any choice. Typical Thai Official mentality. Scapegoat the poor sod on the lowest rung of the ladder. That is an excellent point. I would expect the models were asked what size they were, and when they showed up were handed what amounted to to a uniform for them to wear. I hate to use the L word here in Thailand, but logically the " culture " ministry should be going after the car manufacturers themselves for forcing the poor girls to wear skimpy uniforms. Haha good luck with that, would be fun to see what the hypocritical government would do if Honda talked about pulling out of Thailand.. WhizBang
if they have to use near naked women to sell cars you really have to wonder at the mentality of the ones that buy them. Nothing wrong with seeing near naked women but every country has its own laws and here it is not allowed, very simple. We all want to live here so we must abide by the thai laws(even if we dont agree with them), if seeing naked women all the time is more important to you then maybe you are in the wrong country. We all have out whinges but seriously, naked women mean so much to some of you at a car show, lets us know which head you think with, I thought car shows were to look at the cars, not wandering around staring at models. Wow, what planet have you been living on? I don't go to motor shows because I have no interest in cars, but even I know that the 'prettys' are present in abundance draped over every car. This has been a staple of the auto industry for quite some time now. It you want to blame someone, blame the marketing departments. You know the old adage... 'Sex Sells'. WhizBang
The minister said he has seen the photos of body-painted models and he thought they were revealing too much and their act was not appropriate for the Thai culture. Can we see said photo's please, so people can give an informed opinion as to whether they are appropriate or not Stickman (stickboy?) has them on his site (maybe not for much longer). Very interesting, but this comes under the heading of 'Much ado about nothing'. If one really wants to oogle scantily clad girls, Nana or Soi Cowboy would be a better bet. Whyamiandwhatamidoinghere
Thailand becoming more and more like Singapore literally... Maybe The Little PM wants to be to Thailand as Lee Kuan Yew was to Singapore, who ruled for three decades. Looks like the same authoritarian playbook. micmichd
This is ridiculous. Thailand is world famous for beauty, and beautiful women are part of it. It's a matter of taste whether visitors to motorshows like the models' outfit or not (it's certainly not porn). DM07
As usual I have to go against the grain. I totally agree with the minister. These days they can't get away with just putting pretty girls up on the stand, there has to be more to it, the game has changed. The car shows are put on to sell cars and promote business. They have to give the products the semblance of having class, i.e. including the models, also they are not taking into consideration that probably women are are taking an equal interest in these shows as the men, perhaps more. Oh look...grandpa just got out of bed!

MaxYakov
Which law was violated? Probably something passed by one of the military juntas over the last fifty years that everybody else has forgotten about. You know, I remember in 1971, when I was here on R&R from Pleiku, one of the girls at the Thai Heaven told me that if they went outside the bar dressed the way they dressed inside, they'd be arrested. Let's see, that was Prime Minister Thanom Kittikachorn, but the law/regulation probably went back to Field Marshall Sarit, or maybe Pol. Gen. Pao Sarasin. I've always kind of admired Sarit for his brash confidence escorting younger and younger "nieces" to various public functions. Pao, as near as I've learned, was much more prudish, although arguably more corrupt. (and that's going some). The Culture Ministry is entirely staffed by puritan bluenoses who have no function except to complain that the young women of today have no respect for Thai values. That's where they should have put Purachai, not in Interior where he controlled the Police (at the time). I believe we can give the propriety genesis credit to Field Marshall Plaek Phibunsongkhram (Phibun) in the 30's and 40's. He wanted Western dress for Thais to change the image of Thailand in the West (or so Wiki says) The "uncivilized" Thai apparel is on the left panel of this poster from the era in case it's not obvious: :
