Just read this in another topic, Kan Airlines is flying from Don Muang to U-Tapao. Is this a useful service? Do you think they'll be around for long?

U-Tapao is quite a bit of a drive from Pattaya. I could imagine this being useful for people flying Airasia and landing in Don Muang... I just don't really see them getting the numbers up to be profitable.

Regular price seems to be 990 Baht incl. tax from what I can see.

It's only a 20 minute flight... how much does AirAsia make on their ridiculously low fares (okay, they went up a bit lately)? Also, oil is dead cheap right now... I think they would be quite profitable with 60 people, but not with 10-15 or so.

The six seater is their biz jet , a Beech Premier. I doubt they will be flying DMK to UTP on that. Probably a Cessna Caravan. Jetstar had a Singapore flight to UTP some years back. I think it lasted about a week before they cancelled it. I hope Kan Air make it work otherwise they will lose a lot of cash.

How much is a taxi from U-Tapao to central Patts? I suspect that 490 plus the taxi makes it only of interest to one (possibly 2 together) pax who are arriving at DM or staying close by (maybe the biz sorts who frequent that exhibition facility close to DM. Even those arriving at DM are pretty unlikely to make a quick transfer. For 2, and certainly 3 or more it would be quicker, more convenient and cheaper to take a taxi from DM to your Patts accommodation.

For a single guy flying from eg KK or Ubon (for 990 baht) then that does make a lot of sense!

Hope Kan Air do well. They seem intent on some very useful gap-filling in the Thai skies

Haven't read about services from Bangkok to Pattaya.

Looks like it will be an ATR. It starts the day with a DMK to UTP. On the ground for 30-60 mins before departing to Khon Kaen or Ubon(depending what day of week it is). Flys back down to UTP then does UTP Chiang Mai and back to UTP which fits in with the UTP to DMK return sector and night stops at DMK.

3000 baht revenue per flight? Is it operated by a flight school?

No but your arms get tired from all the flapping...

20 minutes in the air, an hour on the ground at each end.

Crew, fuel, taxes, maintenance and a US$25,000,000 note

From the schedule it only looks like 30 mins?

How much does it cost to run a plane for half a day straight? They seem to be making like 8 trips in 12+ hours.

I think it will be good, some people need to get to Pattaya REALLY fast!

In which case use a taxi!

I think it wins on cost for a single person. Can't see it winning on speed in most circs. Give it a couple of years though. I drove form Central BKK down the Chonburi Patts highway twice last week (mid morning). On both occasions mid morning I was held up for 10-15 minutes by snail-paced traffic queues leading up to the Rom Khlao interchange, caused by heavy traffic from a feeder slip road joining already heavy traffic coming from Bangkok. Don't think it was due to road works anywhere.

I fear this will be a big bottleneck for the future and the days of a quick journey to the airport by road seem numbered. Anyone travelling to Swampy should take note (unless we get better info below that shows that there was some special reason of which I was not aware)

Taxi central BKK to DM 40 mins

Check-in time 45mins

Flight time 35 mins

Check out time (bags) 10 mins

Taxi U-Tapao to central Patts 20 mins

Total 150 mins and my timings are the best you could expect IMO

Taxi central BKK to central Patts 120 to 150 mins. Pretty reliable timing IMO

All with a following wind

Perhaps it makes sense to charge any potential PAX, for a repositioning-flight, but it does seem odd ?

IIRC at one time another airline (I forget who) wasn't permitted to fly Bangkok-domestic routes, but had rights ex-Utapao, so used to just touch-and-go at Utapao en-route.

Aviation in Thailand has opened-up a lot, over recent years ... and a good thing too !

Yes, that sounds impressive.

Or you could arrive in Pattaya Bay on your own yacht.

Look at the map. Don Muang Pattaya. You need to be some time before at the airport. Some more time as safety if there is a traffic jam. After you land it needs some time. Than you need to arrange transportation.

I bet if you go direct with the car you are faster.

Kan air have 1 Atr 72, another new to them in storage, and have another on order, if articles i read are correct.

For anyone silver lakes side of U-tapao, or Ban chang area the journey would be 10 minutes. Flying coffins from Queen Sirikit hospital to pattaya 50/60 baht.

<deleted>, yes absolutely no other destination possible except Pattaya, after all nothing to do but drink beer and get chased by bar girls.

Did it ever occur, that some may want to travel for business to Rayong, Sattahip ,etc.? Or if on holiday, perhaps go to Ko Samet, etc.
