Swedish tourist jailed after hotel rampage

PATTAYA:--A Swedish tourist was arrested for allegedly smashing up his Pattaya hotel room and refusing to pay for the 20,000 baht in damage.

Gary Arne Roger Gronberg, 48, was captured running from the Jomtien Longstay hotel, from where he had fled after climbing down from a third-floor window March 20. Shirtless, he was captured carrying a meter-long metal pipe, which police had to take from him forcibly.

Police said Gronberg claimed he had gotten into a fight with another man in his room about 1 p.m. the day before. The man fled, but when hotel staff came to the door, he thought his opponent had returned and grabbed the pipe and attacked them.

He then barricaded the door with the refrigerator, air conditioner and other objects. Plugs, towels, pillows and sheets were all damaged, costing about 20,000 baht, the hotel said.

He eventually told police he would pay for the damage, but needed to get the money from a friend. He was tossed into jail until the funds arrived.

To be honest, these kind of nutters (disproportionately Scandinavian - there are not that many of them, you know) do keep the journalists in a job.

As someone else mentioned, we hardly have the full story here but,

He also keeps others employed as well so maybe not all bad?

Good enough for him, leave him in jail for a month and see if his attitude changes.

His in for " Attitude Adjustment " which Will surely teach him to have some respect for other people's property.

They should blacklist all these Ting Tong farangs from entering LOS.

Sadly foreigners like this are becoming the norm in Thailand. Wish the Thai government would make it much more difficult to visit or stay here. Perhaps the riff raff would slime its way over to Cambodia lot of these types are there already likely deported from Thailand and elsewhere . One of the many reasons i give the tourist slums a wide berth.

I'm sure that friend will run right now to the jail and give him the money.

I like the phrase, "He was tossed into jail until the funds arrived." Simple, effective approach.

Right, Jimbo, because what Thailand really needs now is a drastic reduction in the number of tourists visiting this country. Oh, wait ....

does he really not have 20K? and surely wouldnt it be better to pay up and avoid time in a thai jail?

if he genuinely doesnt have the money then surely he should be deported due not have enough funds to sustain himself in the kingdom?

Whatever happened, pay the ticket and keep the issue local so that there is no criminal record, no immigration blacklistintg, avoid being transferred to some other province jail, etc. 20k baht is a convenient amount, don't know if it is the right amount or not, but of course the Thais know that amount is sometimes the max amount many ATMs put out.
