BANGKOK: -- An Suvarnabhumi Airport security screener was fired today for attempting to steal money from a passenger's wallet.

Rermruek Tongjattu, 25, who worked at an airport security checkpoint, confessed he attempted to steal SGD50 from a passenger's wallet after the traveler placed it in the basket to go through the scanner at the checkpoint last month on Feb. 1. Rermruek's attempt was thwarted by the passenger's mother who just happened to witness the whole incident.

The mother, Jaemsuda Thompson, said she filed a police report at the airport, however it went ignored until she shared her experience online Sunday, which spread quickly.

"I saw the employee take two Singapore dollar bills that I gave to my son from his wallet. The guy was quick ... like he's professional thief!" Jaemsuda wrote.

I have an acquaintance who takes smartphone pictures of his wallet spread open just before putting his wallet into the plastic basket and won't let the plastic basket containing his wallet start to go through the scanning machine until he can at the same time step through the personal security arch and watch for the plastic basket to emerge on the other side and he keeps one eye on it until he's finished with wand scanning (always stands sideways so he can easily see the roller table)etc., and can grab his wallet.

Why? Maybe one year ago his wallet was emptied at swampy. He reported it to the security supervisor who refused to discuss it, he reported it to the tourist police who just kept saying 'you have no proof that there was any money in the wallet, no further discussion'.

He just got fired. It's time that the prosecution is getting control in Thailand. If someone in Germany at the airport is stealing even 1 Euro from a passenger at the x'ray machines he will not only be fired but he will at least have an appointment in court.

ITs not hard to plan ahead.........Put everything you don't need in a plastic bag...inside your carry on, just leave passport and boarding card out... before getting to the scanner. Why would you drop your valuables into a little 'blue box' leave exposed....................and walk away.

I also find it amazed how so many individual react like they have just stumbled on the 'lost covenant' when they find themselves at the scanner conveyer belt..... And start patting and squishing there pockets and empting mountains of crap into the blue boxes.

Not to be pedantic (ok, maybe a little) but which 2 Singapore dollar denominated notes did he take that would add up to SGD50, given they come in s$2, s$5, s$10 & s$50 (I'm ignoring the s$100+ notes here for obvious reasons) he either took 1 note or took an amount different than SGD50.

Re Wallets/Money (and phones & watches), I always put mine in the bottom of the middle compartment of the bag I'm carrying well before going through security, pet peeve of mine is people who will stand for 30 minutes in a queue then only start to prepare to go through when they get right up to it

I put everything (belt, phone, wallet & watch included) inside a locked computer bag/carry-on except my boarding card, passport & a plastic pen, then those go on the inside pocket of a sports coat.

I wear slip-on loafers w/ no shoes laces as well.

What kills me are the little old ladies that will stand still on (and block) the moving conveyor walkways yet run you over at the gate when they hear the aircraft is boarding.

I bought a small fanny pack I put everything in it zip it up good and when i go through screening simple drop it in the tray. It has 6 pockets some with keys some with passport some with wallet etc.. If customs want to open it and check I watch.

This country really does need to learn that this is the point of entry to Thailand IE the first glimpse we get and therefore memorable. The thing we talk about when others say "Is Thailand a nice place to visit?" Are Thai people nice?"

The true answer is yes but when thieves and scheming taxi drivers are allowed to work at the airport the answer will be NO. Make an example of this man and show us you are serious for once. The fact that the police ignored the report shows that no one is really serious about the cleanup. They only work when they are forced to or are paid extra money.
