martial law is dead, long live martial law

I think the downturn in tourism has nothing to do with martial law. Therefore no implications.

Steven, it's definitely one of the factors but like you, I really don't see the change affecting tourist numbers at all.

I think we can still expect the worst low-season since the one after the tsunami.

We have had the Red Shirts, the Yellow Shirts, the Pink Shirts and now the Khaki Green Shirts. (army) biggrin.png

The lifting of martial law certainly will have some effect on tourist numbers. Some tourists are not coming because they cannot get travel insurance for going to a country under martial law. Unfortunately, the timing is not right and you will only see the results in the next coming high season. In the meantime, many things can happen to negate its effectiveness.

Although not directly related to Phuket, the lifting of martial law will result in resumption of aids from countries like USA, etc.

The US of A didn't impose sanctions or aid when martial law was applied.....this time.

I believe military aid (relatively small) was stopped. Thailand is not affected by this small aid but geo-political play in this region. Due to martial law, USA is forced to distance itself and shove Thailand towards China. Thailand is wary about China's design on its influence in this region, especially sovereign claims in the south China sea.

Ahhhh, yes, the Black Shirts.

We never really found out who was paying them. :)
