Pattaya officials in social media hot water over flooding

PATTAYA:--A day after the water receded from Pattaya’s first big flood of the year, social media remained inundated with photos of the damage the heavy rain brought, with scathing criticism of city hall lackluster performance in solving the perennial problem.

The near-universal opinion online was the more city hall works to end flooding, the worse it gets.

Online users pointed to both sides of railway parallel road between sois Khao Noi and Khao Talo, where floodwaters ran very deep, almost reaching the top of the cars. Some cars broke down in the middle of the road and people had to push them out of the flood in the rain.

Soi Nernplabwan and Soi Khao Noi are low lying and have poor drainage systems and also flooded. A large amount of garbage floated in the raging water, scenes that residents said they become accustomed to.

Pattaya Beach was severely damaged and filled with garbage. Pattaya has mobilized disaster mitigation officials to survey the damage and provide help to residents.

Previously the city has carried out many projects to counter flooding, such as installing water pumps and laying new drainage pipes along Beach Road. But residents said they think 80 percent of the problems still remain.

There also was widespread skepticism about the under-construction traffic-bypass tunnel under Sukhumvit Road. While engineers insist the entrances to the tunnels will be elevated three meters to prevent flooding, witnesses to city hall’s seemingly futile efforts to solving endemic flooding are putting little stock in the promises of public officials.

Seems a slight exaggeration here!

I got stuck at the bottom of Khao Noi and had to park up for an hour. There is no way the water was reaching the top of cars and the reason cars broke down in the middle of road was because some numpties thought they could drive uphill through the torrent rather than wait a short while.

City Hall has always been far more concerned with putting on event after event to promote tourism and get that all important baht flowing in to line the pockets of these officials, rather than actually doing their job and fixing the problems this city has.

They need to fix the flooding and traffic problems FIRST! Instead, what they do is put bandaids on and not very good bandaids at that.

Hmm. "Lackluster performance by city hall". I'm not sure their performance is even good enough to rate a "lackluster" rating. "Dismal" comes to mind. As posters have said in the past, there is just no will to get anything done when it comes to city hall. There is absolutely no oversight being done on construction projects so they all turn out badly, no inspection being done before the work is paid for, and maybe most seriously, no maintenance being done after the work is finished. One of the reasons some areas flood badly is the flood drains are never cleaned and they are all clogged up. When you have grass, weeds, and in some cases the start of shrubs growing out of the flood drains, you can see that no maintenance is being done. Yesterday on Sukumvit I noticed there was a team of about 5 or 6 workers sweeping the road with straw brooms near the new tunnel construction. A totally ineffective way to clean a major highway. Time to move into the 21st century and buy some street sweepers and lane striping equipment while you're at it. For those keeping score, Jomtien Second Road still does not have working street lights on a large section of the road by the Riviera showroom and most of it has not been lane striped even though the road is about 2 years old or more. Most roads in Pattaya and Jomtien need lane striping so why not buy the equipment and get it done?

City halls engineers can not fix the beach road, but can stop the work on Water Front. Maybe the BR is too difficult.

Why not dig a ditch soi 6/BR put there some cement, make pedestrian bridge over. Thats it! Even stupid falang understund something.

Looking that 8 years already.

stopping work is easy, but its obvious they have a zero maintenence policy on the beach at the moment. I saw a tourist fall into one of those 4 feet deep holes on the path before walking st a few nights ago. no warnings, no barriers, the lights are all out in that area, one truck load of dirt would fill them but they just leave them for the locals to throw their rubbish in
