Songkran celebrations on Silom start

Featured Replies

Bangkok:- Songkran celebrations start early on Bangkok’s Silom Road with huge crowds of revelers turning up to splash water and indulge in the festive mood since Sunday afternoon.

Songkran period officially runs from April 13 to April 15.

Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) in collaboration with Silom entrepreneurs, however, has decided to kick off the Songkran celebrations on Sunday.

During the three-day event, the road is closed to traffic between noon and 9pm.

As water throwing is a prominent part of Songkran, the Metropolitan Waterworks Authority has agreed to provide free water to people who come to splash water on Silom Road during the celebration.

“We even have an 80-meter-long water tunnel to delight revelers,” says Vallop Suwandee, the chief advisor to Bangkok Governor MR Sukhumbhand Paribatra.

The Songkran celebrations on Silom Road come with a parade of Buddha image for people to pour water on and ask for blessings, a parade of Songkran beauty queens, and a floral vehicle parade.

Various forms of entertainment including cultural shows and traditional Thai games are also available.

The Silom Road is declared a no-alcohol and no-powder zone during the Songkran festival so as to prevent brawling, accidents and sexual harassment. Powder is banned because some people have used it as an excuse to sexually touch the body of other people.

Police, soldiers and volunteers are now deployed on Silom Road to ensure the safety of Songkran revelers.

Many other roads in Bangkok will also be closed to traffic tomorrow to let people have fun with Songkran, one of Thailand’s most colorful festivals.
