MOPH to upgrade Institute of Geriatric Medicine as a specialized institute

NONTHABURI, 13 April 2015 (NNT) – The Ministry of Public Health (MOPH) is set to upgrade the Institute of Geriatric Medicine into a national institute that specializes in care for elders to accommodate the nation's transition towards an aging society, says a DMS official.

The Director-General of the Department of Medical Services (DMS) Suphan Srithamma said today on the occasion of National Day for Older Persons, that the MOPH has a policy to accommodate Thailand's growing aging society in 2015. The number of senior citizens in Thailand is expected to rise above 20 percent of the entire national population.

He said that a healthcare system for elders is required to reduce illness, increase the quality of life, and increase the happiness of family members and the elders themselves.

On this matter, the DMS has planned to improve the existing Institute of Geriatric Medicine, to become a national institute that provides specialized care for elders with the system that categorizes elderly patients in three groups. The three groups include those with normal health conditions, those who are beginning to become weak, and those who are bedridden and cannot help themselves.

The first group of patients will receive information and will participate in activities that will promote a healthy lifestyle The second group, reaching certain physical limitations, will be looked after by utilizing the management system that provides thorough care in health complications to help slow down physical deterioration. The third category of patients will be treated with the Family Doctor team at their home in a complete elderly health care system.

According to the statistics from the National Statistical Office, Thailand's population experiences an increase of elders by approximately 500,000 persons each year, while the amount of elders in 2014 is recorded at 10 million people, with an overwhelming 95 percent also suffering from medical complications. Thailand is expected to be categories as an aging society in 2015, as the number of senior citizens has increased to over 20 percent of the entire national population.
