Thailand (and many other countries) has always been a bi-polar hypocrite when it comes to sex. Conservative face to the world and population while a short time hotel and nudey bar are just around the block. Pass laws and regulate morality instead of educate and all you get are crime bosses or insulated individuals running the show at inflated prices.

Why not go after commercials on T.V. or dancing on variety shows where scantily clad dancers are doing their best to titillate the viewers of all ages... " Whoa there big fella can't do that sex sells"!

Actually I am not necessarily picking on Thailand for most countries have two sets of laws.. Those for the pedestrians and those for the elite.. Drug war where has it worked...arrest prostitutes has not stopped it yet..... even in the mid-east if you service the royals..

I wonder how much the girls were being paid to dance or was it just a party freebie?.. Since they were basically in the same type uniform(sarcasm) I assume it was more than an impromptu event.

The girl who does nails and feet at my local salon works 10 days on with one day off for almost nothing but tips.. The girls at the golf course snack bar never have a scheduled day off unless it is a recognized holiday and the course is closed; if not closed then only one at a time gets an unpaid day off.

Sorry I really have very little patience for hypocrites who want to arrest and fine instead of educate in any country..

Did it ever occur to you that Songkran may be the only time all year that the entire family are together ? Many people from the rural areas work in the big cities and make a big effort to get home and spend some time with their families. And believe it or not some actually see it for what it is, not just dancing girls and water being tossed everywhere.

The whole mad party thing around Songkran is typically only for 'common' Thais. The upper echelons sprinkle each others heads a bit and pray, but most of them, if possible, fly out of the country to avoid Songkran altogether. Most 'normal' middle class Thais don't participate either out of boredom(too many times leaw), fear of having to mix with drunk commoners or just don't feel like it. The middle and upper classes that do participate mostly have their own private party around their front door/yard where they usually don't play that horrible loud Isaan techno at levels that help one understand why most Thais have hearing/listening problems and they serve Black Label all day long to anyone who is invited to join in. I've had the luck to be able to celebrate Songkran on every level of society and after perhaps 7 or 8 Songkrans I've thrown in the towel. Having a 3 year old kid doesn't help that matter too much either. Some not so bright individuals drink and drive their trucks with large barrels on the back full of ice cubes and drunk revelers throwing buckets left and right without any awareness for smaller kids.

Had a stroll down Chok Chai 4(Lad Prao, Bkk) yesterday and couldn't stop thinking how many of these idiots speeding on their motorcy are going to end up in hospital or the wat later today, if not tomorrow. So, yes, I understand that 'normal' Thais have had enough of all the danger and madness of this alcoholic festival that always ends in 100's of Thais wounded or worse. And besides the country is on its a-rse for several days. At the same time I guess the 'common' Thais need to let of steam after being used and abused for another full year by those 'normal' Thais.
