KanomPang
My parents are coming over to visit me and my family for the first time. They are late 60's early 70's and think that no one their age has ever travelled outside the UK before. Anyway the question is that my father takes many tablets and medicines which include; liquid morphine & tablet morphine 10mg. My mum is researching and coming back with information that these are banned substances in Thailand and she will need 'an import license for these drugs'. Does anyone have any experience of bringing morphine into Thailand and how they approached it? Did have a look on the internet, but didn't find out much information. Any help much appreciated. Thanks Duncan
TheAppletons
Try these links from the Thai embassy in Ottawa, Canada....the second link gets into the specifics of obtaining the permit to bring Class 2 narcotics for prescription/personal use NTE 30 days: http://www.thaiembassy.ca/en/visiting-thailand/bringing-medication-thailand http://narcotic.fda.moph.go.th/faq/upload/guidance%20for%20travelers%20version%204.doc._e1a4.pdf As with many things in Thailand, I wouldn't be surprised if different Thai embassies/consulates located in different countries had conflicting guidance.

NancyL
This should probably be moved over to the Health forum where the excellent moderator Sheryl could answer their questions. She's a nurse who has been in Thailand forever. It would help to know how long they plan to be here and why these drugs were prescribed. As you well know, Chiang Mai has hundreds of foreigners over age 70 and a few require morphine at home, but rarely on a long-term, continuing basis. The rules are quite restrictive and Thai doctors are reluctant to prescribe it for on-going treatment. You're wise to look into this in advance.

Sheryl
Assuming they will not be here more than a month, just follow the instructions in the second link given in TheAppletons post. Thai FDA are usually prompt in responding to requests and many people have been able to get the needed permit. BTW these are not "banned" substances in Thailand but rather controlled substances, as they are also in the UK.
