KATHMANDU: -- Marisa Eve Girawong, a Thai-American physician at the Mt. Everest base camp was killed under an avalanche of ice and rock caused by Saturday’s 7.9 magnitude earthquake in Nepal.

Born in Thailand, Girawong, 29, lived in the US state of New Jersey and had been working at the base camp for a year prior to the disastrous quake, the rising death toll of which has increased over 3,000 this morning.

You went as far as you could go up that mountain doctor. In the end it wasn't your fault. You were young, dedicated and committed to a goal. You knew the risks; and you accepted them, but somehow we always think that we can defy them. It's the difference between great people, and those who sit and watch, and never try. May you be an inspiration of hope and determination for every Thai child to challenge the impossible, and win.

Tragic and most unfortunate, but that's what can happen when you don't afford such mountains the respect and distance they deserve/demand.

...how is it that they do not know what areas were affected....and how many people possibly perished....

...7.9 is huge.....

...they can check by satellite....

...terrible disaster....my condolences to all the family and friends of the victims...and my sympathies to the spiritual center of the world...Nepal...
