The goods news is if we ever get 3G here its 384kbps, but 4G may well be out before then (really an ehancment of 3G) which they have NTT have got up to 1Gbps, so you may have to try others like mentioned net2phone

Where I live I have Edge connectivity, but even though much better then GPRS it's still unusable for VOIP. Neither Skype nor net2phone are usable.

Reason is not the speed as such, but the fact that the data tends to come in short but fast bursts. For any voice application it's much better to get a slow but very steady data stream. Everytime the data stream halts, so does the sound, giving you terribly broken up conversations.
