I want over the Xmas hols to drive my pickup to Siem Reap, but have still to hear from anyone who has actually done it.

So I hoping to hear from someone who has taken a private vehicle (Thai registered) from Thailand into Cambodia and back.

What documents did you need, what formalities and costs did you incur on the border - both ways and what hassles if any did you encounter with Cambodian authorities whilst in the country?

What about insurance, where are you allowed to go? Is there private vehicle access into the Ankhor Wat compound? How much?

What extra things should I take for the journey/truck?

Also is anyone interested in forming a convoy?

Thanks in advance......

Wilko,

Check out these threads:

Yes....but I still can't find a single posting by someone who as ACTUALLY done it....

Did you do it in the end?

I'm not worried about the roads, I'm trying to find out about paperwork, and restrictions on where you can go etc.

No... I was convinced that at that time of year it would be too wet... so maybe in the dry season.

I will definitely be flying.

i've been looking into this for some time now and I still haven't met a single person who's actually done it....lots of advice but no practical experience.

e.g. RHD is actually illegal in Cambodia! You must have a Cambodian driving licence.....is a Thai one valid under the ASEAN treaty? What about other licences.....

I still think it's do-able but I reckon with two or more vehicles. It's not that far!

There was a Lorry (BIG TRUCK) busted through a bridge on our way ..... we were stuck for HOURS waiting on 2 pickups to come and get us from the other side. Then another 2 hours into SR packed 16 to the back of a truck with backpacks etc! Had we been driving we would have been stuck for almost 2 days waiting on them to lear and repair that bridge

As for the driving in Angkor Wat question, it's highly unlikely they would let you. I came back from Siem Reap 3 weeks ago. My friend knew one of the security guards (a previous student of his), and after a bit of persuasion allowed us to ride around on dirt bikes, but it wasn't straight forward. The cost was the standard entry price (20 bucks I think).

Used to do the run in 1992/3 and the road wasnt too bad then.

Japanese army lads had been tasked to rebuilt some of the bridges (from an earlier era)but looking at the pics they didnt do a very good job. :o .....liked their sushi too much.

Also always travelled with a wee bit of protection... and dont mean condoms.

The rubber sandal boys brigades could be a little bit contemptuous sometimes although generally they were OK....

case of Sok Subai . Arkun Sharan..Tom Tom...& a cheerfull..Lee Hai... :D

In answer to your original post, no i havent driven it, but i would sure be interested in joining you.

I have done a couple weeks motorcycle touring in Cambodia a couple of years ago, and i can honestly say that it was the highlight of my life. A truly amazing experience.

Yes, the roads suck but nothing a decent 4 wheel drive couldnt handle. Currently i have an Escape, and i wouldnt be worried about the road to Siem Reap.

Drop me a PM if you find out any further info. I suppose one way to find out would be just to have a drive to Aranya one weekend and see what they say when you turn up at the border with the car.
