Chiang Mai:- A drunk university student swept a group of five cyclists on her way home in Chiang Mai Sunday morning, killing three of them at the scene and badly injuring the other two, police said.

Phatchuda Jairuen, 24, admitted to police that she was under alcohol influence after she drank at a pub in Chiang Mai downtown Saturday night and she was sleepy while driving home.

Pol Maj Suriyan Jansai, an interrogator of Doi Saket police station, was alerted of the accident at 6 am. The accident happened on the Chiang Mai-Chiang Rai Road in Doi Saket district.

He rushed to the scene with a doctor on duty and rescuers of Samret Chiang Mai foundation.

They found an overturned black Toyota Yaris on the road and five completely damaged bicycles and three bodies. Two injured cyclists have already been rushed to the Doi Saket Hospital.

Phatchuda, a student of a university in Chiang Mai, was still inside the car. She appeared drunk and perplexed in what has happened. She said she was driving home in Wieng Heng district from Chiang Mai downtown and she had already parked and took a nap before she continued her drive.

Police found that her blood alcohol level was 67 milligrams per cent, higher than the limit of 50 milligram per cent. She was charged with drunk driving causing deaths and injuries.

The three victims were identified as Chairat Yonglun, 65, Samarn Kantha, 62 and Pongthep Khamkaew, 40.

Polsak Polsing, 36, and Surapol Khamsing, 56, were injured.

Polsak told police that he and 19 other members of the Sua Sansai Bike Club were riding from Sansai district to Mae Khachan Hot Spring in Chiang Rai.

The cyclists were divided into three groups. Polsak said he and four others were in the middle group. He said the car was seen swaying and passing the rear group to hit his middle group.

According to some facebook pages she was not alone in the car. A 56 year old high ranking army person was with her. So 23 year old Uni student, the mia noi of the army guy perhaps ? Both drunk from a night out, rushing to get back, boom, 3 people dead.

Won't need anything to get away scot free. The old guy will just get the mad general to "have a word"

Strange how the Thai media seems to omit the presence of the high ranking army officer.... The silence speaks volumes.

I don't think she will get a slap on the wrist for this, regardless of who may have also been in the car. Two seniors have been killed. People who ride bikes in these groups are generally well-to-do. She will be paying her freedom with a fairly substantial sum, I think. She should be put on community service too. Perhaps a stint in a rescue ambulance would do nicely. Never heard of anyone going to jail for a crime such as this.

Well the official Thai media is censored and tightly controlled by guess who ? You've got it the mad General's cronies. Already working by keeping his name out the news. As for the girl well, probably doesn't have a driving license and car was provided as part of her "Mia Noi service" payment. Human live is considered worthless in Thailand, the Baht far more important,

Usually this would read, Phatchuda, a student of a university in Chiang Mai, was still in the driver's seat ….

Maybe she was "perplexed" because just a few minutes earlier she had been snoozing while her "boyfriend" had been driving.

This one bears watching as her punishment, if any, is meted out.

Wow! You've nailed the details of the circumstances surrounding this tragedy AND the likely outcome all from the comfort of your porch recliner.

Would you be willing to consider a consultant's role with the Royal Thai Police?

There are videos of this accident taken right after it happened and uploaded to social media. The female drunk driver is hanging out of the drivers window wailing and screaming with a broken arm . There are three dead cyclists on the road, other injured cyclists at the side of the road. No emergency services they have not arrived yet. Your imaginary high ranking military man is nowhere to be seen. I wont say your post is total <deleted> there is no need.

In Thailand? never....maybe a poor person killing a hi-so...go ask the Porsche driver cutting the Lao girl in half and carrying her torso down the road as a passenger. Go find out if he's in jail. Or cocaine snorting cop killer? Is he in jail? Show me the details of ONE person in Thailand having been jailed for such a crime. You cannot..

Sadly, military or police situations of higher ranking officers, of influence, seem to skate... a few years ago there was that situation with a mysterious driver and his MN...in Bangkok, hit a lady because she would not give up a parking space.... caught on tape...

A big hoop tee do...then nothing more..

RIP to the bicyclist families... seems the even carrying those tall colorful flags do no good.

On the youtube the other day, there was a BIB who felt asleep at a stop light.... holding up trafffic....approached by a policeman, put his badge to the window, and continued sleeping..

Never riding a bike...except on dirt roads far away from cars..

Just sad....RIP....

Cyclists are a bit of a nuisance to be fair, she will probably get a few hours community service and then feel hard done by.

To be fair your being unfair in your statement. I say this as a cyclist. What a rotten thing to say. Well actually the way you say this do you actually know what fair means. You sound like one of those "Always Right" people. I would guess from young up you had trouble sharing even your toys. Three people were killed here and 2 seriously wounded. I think you should redo your statement hit the edit button.

I am a cyclist, and I know the road where the accident happened. Most cyclists have some sort of lights, often flashing, or at least someone in each group has lights. But I don't cycle in the dark, because it's quite dangerous enough in the daylight..! My condolences to the families of those killed, and injured. The driver of the car must be punished, but unfortunately, it will not stop it happening again..? The roads get busier, and more dangerous, every year, and everyone is in too much of a hurry..

It will be a cold day in h3ell before I take a bicycle out onto a Thai road.

Buffalo and cart to modern motorized vehicles way too quickly. About one generation and in many if not most cases, less.

It's impossible to tell from the video if anyone else was inside the car, but the girl is definitely partially ejected from the passenger window (remember the steering wheel is on the right-hand side of the car in Thailand and the car is inverted).

We have now one guy who claim that there was something on face book.....

Any proof?

Well if you look at the video you can clearly see the young woman is trapped half way out the passenger side window, but unfortunately cannot see the other side, some of the comments on the clip are interesting.
