Beef Steak

Featured Replies

I will be visiting my gf in BKK in a couple of weeks and wanted to know where I can get some decent quality beef steak for us to cook at home. She is not Thai and doesn't speak Thai so I am sure that will limit us a bit. I understand from reading older threads on this forum that the quality of beef is not as good as here in the USA. That being said, how bad is it? What should I look for (any particular brands or types) and how much would I expect to spend per kg? Thanks a bunch for your time.

El Gaucho Steakhouse on Suk 11 and 19 both have meat counters. You can walk in and buy whatever you want. Great steaks, but you better bring a fat wallet.

Thanks for the tip, can you give me a rough ballpark on price. I'm sure they will be way more expensive than here in the states, just wondering how much so, for budgeting purposes.

There are excellent sections of Beef - US, AUS, Japanese, Grain-fed, Grass-fed, Wagyu, Angus and more at Gourmet Markets (Supermarkets at Emporium Shopping Mall, Paragon Shopping Mall, EmQuatier Shopping Mall), Also Villa Super Markets (which can be found around Bkk - Sukhumvit 33/1 is probably the most convent from the Sky Train)....

The above mentioned selections are pricey - a decent 200gm steak often costs in excess of 700-800 baht.

A well priced and decent alternative is to go to a local Butchers which sells Thai French beef - this is much cheaper but decent enough beef.

Thai French Butcher is on Sukhumvit 33/1 (next to Villa - Subway Sandwich shop on the corner).

There is also a very good Butchers down the Small Soi Opposite Molly Maloneys Irish Pub on Soi Convent (just off Silom rd) - the Butchers is Opposite a good restaurant called Indigo. This Butchers also sells mainly Thai French beef.

Thai French beef costs approximately 150-200 baht per 200gm steak.

The Thai/French place mentioned here is the best option by Soi 33/1

steak house on soi 11 with a retail counter, where?

coming from the top of the soi it's on the right hand side on the corner of the entrance to soi 11/1 just before boots.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned central Chidlom foodhall. The meat counter Imo is the best in Bangkok. It's run by a foreign butcher ( simon ) and he personally orders all the meat. ( actually he is responsible for the ordering of all the central groups meat )

He always has some daily specials for steaks, or other beef cuts and if you buy in bulk he will give you a sizable discount.
