25 hopeful grape-pickers cheated
The Nation

BANGKOK: -- A number of 25 Thais on Tuesday filed a complaint at the Crime Suppression Division against a broker who approached them to pick grapes in Australia.

Supaporn Passa, 56, a farmer from Nakhon Ratchasima, said that she was approached by a cousin named Sai. Sai’s boyfriend, called Natee, promised Bt5,000 daily wage but demanded Bt100,000 from each worker to finance the trip arrangement.

All were scheduled to leave Bangkok on May 11 but the broker disappeared.

Supaporn said most of the 25 people borrowed for the arrangement cost or mortgaged their land.

See, here is the big difference between farang and Thai, no farang would ever trust a Thai enough to give them 100,000 baht in advance for anything. Oops, except for the silly farang that give that and more to their Thai gf. cheesy.gif

It's easy to scam a person, you just need to find someone who is A) stupid and: cool.png greedy.

Wanting to work can hardly be classed stupid and greedy, particularly in a country where there is no social security.

Very sad and left the victims in a mountain of debt.

The op was not, clearly, criticising the people for wanting to work, but for the idiocy of putting up 100,000Bb to obtain work.

Even these people should have spotted something.

I am sure Bernie, who Made off with billions of dollars, of peoples hard earned savings, would agree with you. It's easy to scam a person. Plenty of stupid and greedy people here and elsewhere too.

Why stupid and greedy? Has it occurred to you that maybe they are desperate to provide a better life for themselves and their loved ones?

Yes, gullible, but then there are shiploads of farangs just as gullible and just as desperate out there. The difference is, the TV crew don't like to bash them as their sport of choice is bashing anything that has the word "Thai" in it.

There is any number of heartless scams going on all the time in SE Asia - false marriages to Americans, special injections that allow women to get pregnant, etc. Apparently these people are able to live with themselves. I was scammed by an investment advisor. The problem is that the scammers seem trustworthy at first. I am still steaming about my investment losses. It turned out that the scammer was deceptively using the name of a very trustworthy advisor and I fell for the fiction.

I am sorry to say it, but seriously, were they too stupid to realise that 100,000b up front just might be a scam?

That is approximately the upfront cost for the work-travel programs many university students take advantage of during they're school breaks in order to work in the US. Most of those programs are legitimate, though some more than others.

Not only that, it's not unusual in this part of the world for people to have to pay an agent up-front for an overseas job. Easy to say this is a scam after the fact, but such transactions take place every day. I know quite a few people who have paid out much more than this to get work overseas.

Could also read as: '' It's easy to scam a person, you just need to find someone who is A) stupid and: B) horny. Plenty of Farang victims to be had for the taking.'' ;)
