charlee27 Posted May 13, 2015 Posted May 13, 2015 I am due to get married to my Thai boyfriend early next year, now the marriage requirements I can find online no problem (400,000 in thai bank account, earning 40,000 a month etc), but we have heard the requirements aren't the same for a western woman marrying a Thai man. Can anyone confirm this? And if so, can you give me the requirements needed for myself? Please help… this is driving me mad! Thanks in advance
Mario2008 Posted May 13, 2015 Posted May 13, 2015 Indeed, the requirements are different. In essence, you do not need to show an income or money in the bank, you just proof that you are married to a Thai. All other documents, such as marriage certificate, household registration husband, ID-card husband, pictures of you and husband around the house and in the house, map to the house etc are the same. 1
lopburi3 Posted May 13, 2015 Posted May 13, 2015 There are no such requirements for anyone for a visa - those are for a male extending on a yearly basis - for a female there are no financial requirements as the husband is expected to be the provider - and there is no set amount required - you both just have to appear at immigration each year with the normal documents to obtain. Very easy so should not be a cause for anxiety. 1
ubonjoe Posted May 13, 2015 Posted May 13, 2015 You do not need to meet any financial requirements to get an extension of stay (it is not a visa) based upon marriage to Thai man.
charlee27 Posted May 13, 2015 Author Posted May 13, 2015 I thought thats what it was, but thank you very much friend… great news haha!! And…. I don't suppose you know how one should maintain a dual nationality? I have also been informed only western women can apply for this now, whereas western men can't…. is there truth in this? 1
lopburi3 Posted May 13, 2015 Posted May 13, 2015 You do not lose nationality. Unless your other nationality requires it. Thailand has no such requirement male or female. But it is not recognized by law (just as in USA) but it is not against any law so allowed.

I assume you are asking about getting Thai citizenship. Once married and on extensions of stay you will be able to apply for it For you the requirements will be less than what others have to meet to apply. Anybody can apply for citizenship it they can meet the requirements. 1
Mario2008 Posted May 13, 2015 Posted May 13, 2015 Dual nationality is no problem under Thai law, but you can't make use of your second nationality in Thailand itself. So if you also receive Thai nationality, you must always enter on your Thai passport and cannot apply for consular help from the country you also have the nationality of.
charlee27 Posted May 13, 2015 Author Posted May 13, 2015 Yes, Thai citizenship but keeping my british passport also! So once married, I can apply for that? Great!!! 1

But if i had dual nationality, surely that would make life easier in terms of visa's and work permits as I wouldn't need them anymore? Or am I misinformed on that? Obviously when traveling back to the UK id enter on my UK passport and coming back here id enter on my Thai passport, no? (sorry if I'm asking too much that may seem obvious, I'm just not very good at this stuff, and I find so many different answers from different people!) 1
Mario2008 Posted May 13, 2015 Posted May 13, 2015 Yes, you would enter and leave the UK on the UK passport and leave and enter Thailand on the Thai passport. I am saying you can use the UK passport to enter Thailand as a UK national. In Thailand as a Thai national you obviously don't need a work permit and can buy land in your own name. At check-in for the airline etc you just show both passports to the airline staff to confirm no visa is needed, but at immigration you show only 1 passport. 1
charlee27 Posted May 13, 2015 Author Posted May 13, 2015 Thanks so much for your help… I really appreciate it. 1
