I came to understand in Thailand what "Amazing Thailand" means.

If you go to the northern low-income Thailand, be careful not to be overcharged.

I stay in Mae Sai, the northernmost city in Thailand bordering with Myanmar, so it is easy to cross the border to visit the neighbor town, Tachileik or Shan State.

I first describe a good apartment house which, surprisingly, has no website.

<deleted>e, about 20m behind the main road, . This apartment building with the ground floor used as inn and with the 2nd and the 3rd floors offered as apartment rooms with air conditioner and and TV and bed, nothing else. The apartment rooms are offered for longer than three months. Rent + electricity + nominal water charge. Even in the hottest month like now, the total cost would be 5,000 B/month,

Meanwhile, a three-story building, <deleted>, cashes in on foreigners by cheating with 5,000 B/ month plus electricity. What is cheated? At the beginning, the offer was the price inclusive of all, WiFi, washing clothes, water and the furnished room. But from the very first day, the apartment keeper offered no WiFi for nights, no air conditioner which she insists can only be offered with additional charge. This small but furnished room (fridge, TV set, bed, closet, fan) of about 9 m2 can cost 2,500 B / month by the local market standard, which I came to learn soon.

The house keeper even turned off internet while I needed to use day time. I lost 5,000 bahts for just staying there one week and gave up due to scorching hot room with only a fan, as I didn't compromise for paying more than fair market value of this district. It looks like all foreigners are pray in her pot of cash-box to be profiteered. But I can easily assume that this is not only in this house, but also in other apartments/guest houses run by amateurs, not by professional management.

Thailand's lack of regulations on transparency of pricing can cause you unexpected expense. But do not convert currency into your own such as Euro, GBP, or dollar. The problem is the discrimination and cheating in this case.

But Thailand itself discriminates foreigners by pricing in national parks, 40 B normal price is 200 B for foreigners, even when passing on road through national park.

"Smile on face" - it looks horrible when the true intention is to cash in on prays who showed up in their field of game without speaking Thai.

Be careful in choosing an accommodation. <deleted>, is run by a well-established hotelier based in Chiang Rai and managed by the company, so price is uniform and no discrimination, transparent pricing and very good environment next to large field.

Jonny....I'm guessing here, so please forgive.

But your either some young backpacker unaware of the ecomonics of rooms for rent. ...ie landlords will try to maximize the rent and income as much as they can and landlords who charge for every little thing (which you obviously find annoying) are aware that their clientle will soon get fed up and leave (news to you....they don't care!). And Then....there are other landlords who want to keep everything straightforward and easy for everyone (especially themselves) whereby they keep their tenants longer and everybody is happy.....

OR your some Cheap Charlie who just came on here to complain because you THINK you got ripped off for a few bahtbah.gif .....get over itcoffee1.gif

sounds like you moved on and am happy now (not really sure about that as probably nothing makes you happy unless your complaining).....whistling.gif

I'm sure you could've posted your reviews of the two places in a more succient and civil way but .......then again you didn'tblink.png

Thank you for your comment.

So this is crass custom of economics in the low income north.

Maybe higher income and touristic south is different.... I will visit there once.

I will be careful which house to choose from now.

Will go to try Phrae soon.

Isn't that part of what traveling to new places is like...at first you get ripped off because you don't know any better and you move on and learn.

Best to do a little research ahead of time.thumbsup.gif

I have to admit it's irritating to realise that all inclusive sometimes excludes essential services that you thought were in, or that someone is milking you. However you can always vote with your feet and walk, as you have done. Lesson learned and not too much lost.

The only difference you are likely to find in touristy areas is that the scams are more expensive.

Yes, you do need to be careful here (and elsewhere) and check everything before you pay. All over the world many people are out to rip-off tourists.

Thank you for your replies.

I heard here is also a one-room house newly built is for rent for 1,500 Bahts. Everything inside tenant must get by himself.

Someone rented for one year by paying the annual rent.

By the way, rain clouds are dangerously low, so thunder often hits power facilities, i.d. black-pit is usual in the rain season.

This region is developing, many investors put money into new residential houses, commercial complex, hypermarkets, but here is no malls. Population of only about 120k.

You're lucky it is only the thunder hitting it, as lighting causes much more damage.

Thunder hits my ears sometimes...
