Why does soda water always seem to be in glass bottles

All the other non alcoholic drinks are available in plastic bottles. What is so special about soda water?

I seem to remember that other countries use plastic bottles.

You can buy it in cans if you wish. Never saw it in plastic. A good thing in my view given the downside of plastic.

I drink two or three small bottles of plain soda water a day, but I doubt enough people in Thailand drink it to make it worthwhile selling 1.25 plastic bottles. Most of the small bottles are probably sold in bars. Soda water tastes better in glass anyway and at around 130 baht for 24 bottles it is very inexpensive. Just a pain that hardly anyone wants to recycle the empties.

Sure.

But not in the "usual" chain shops in single quantities as you might expect.

They are only sold in crates of 24 bottles.

Initially you have to buy the crate and the bottles and then exchange empty for full.

125 Baht for 24 bottles of 0.4 liters (little more than 5 Baht per bottle).

Now you know the margin when you pay 50 Baht for a bottle at Pattaya Beach

You get them at mom&pop shops or specialised drink shops.

The chain shops don't bother for the exchange/recycle system.

For my home use I buy these since years.

There are carbonated drinks in plastic bottles in Thailand as well as in Germany e.g.

But these bottles are not the usual thin PET type, but much more "sturdy" and in Germany they are recycled.

Similar recycle systems exits for simple drinking water in 0.5 liter bottles and for softdrinks like Pepsi, Coke and so on (small bottles, 0.25??).

We have a guy that comes around once a month and takes all the bottles, soda, whiskey and beer plus the plastic bottles, metal and almost anything that has a salvage value. We make about 30 to 50 baht a month from him and all we have to do is to separate at the source.

Good for him and his familiy and good for us as the recyclables are taken away.

When I were nobbut a lad soda came in bottles like this.

I have six to eight cases delivered to my house every other week. Its 70b for 24 500cc glass bottles. Need to pay a deposit of 5b per bottle and I think 300 or 400 for the crate.

It appears that all the soft drinks are made from soda water, with various concentrates added and sugar, of course.

So it seems to be not pressure related.

Soda water, tonic water, available in plastic all over the US. It can handle the pressure. Coke & Pepsi have pressure.
