My first stand-up argument in Thailand when shopping

Might have been very small print on the reduced label with dates of offer, already expired whistling.gif

I have been caught out by this in Central Festival a couple of times. They leave the reduced label on show long after the expiry date, and then point out the full price is what you must pay. It would not work in UK, but hey TIT!

This must be some shop rule had the same thing with a packet of custard creams on promo right opposite the tills got charged full price pointed to the sticker and was told promo had finished so I left without the creams I just don't see how this M+S survives on selling half price jaffas it must have been the shops biggest sale ever..

So that's the reason Aussies can't roll their Jaffas in the aisle anymore - bloody Brits have cornered the market.

In that case they should have removed the reduced label.

next time, take a picture

in big c, they have nice offers, only 50% off, for items that are over date at least 2 weeks

Yeah, but when they offer bags of Fox's Glacier Fruits on those stands for 5 baht each I take the lot. thumbsup.gif

If you want to have some fun, look at some of the offers on reductions based on quantity.

I quite often point out that their reduced offer of 2,3 or 4 is more expensive than buying 2,3,or 4 of the items singularly.

It's usually met with a blank stare as if I'm a 'numpty' followed by "yes, but it's on offer" blink.png

The other week it was washing up liquid. 36 baht a bottle, or 'reduced' pack of 3 for 110 baht?

Again blank looks when I pointed out the error.

It wasn't until I wrote the maths down on a piece of paper that it suddenly twigged....then the manager checking my figures.....then chaos as they scurry around checking price lists etc. It's quite amusing to watch biggrin.png

Meanwhile having put the one bottle, which is all I wanted, in my trolley, I slip through the checkout leaving the chaos behind.

Mr OP. You did the right thing, as long as you know you are right, I have found out that every time I stood my ground,

I have won, as long as you don't show any anger, and you are definitely right, you will win.

Happens all the time to me in Tesco

I always go back to the shelf myself to point at the label with the reduced price

Another idea could be to make a photo with your phone

Someone might get miffed if they saw you taking photos in the Lotus. A couple of weeks ago there was a clothes rack with a big 50% reduced sign over the top. Took a shirt to reception to find the shirt was 30% off, there was a tiny red sticker behind the price label. A friend went to the same store and bought 12 bottles of Spy, 3B cheaper if you buy a tray. At check out the bar code didn't work so the cashier took a bottle out and ping the price for one bottle came up x 12.

Oh BTW I do wish they would let me take my camera in to T/L I want a pic of the girls with their little paddles saying I am available.

Just as well the argument wasn't over something trivial... custard creams for example.

Does the MS in Bangkok sell custard creams? I must get down there.

I'm always impressed at our capacity for unusual entertainment. I usually think golf or tennis, playing music or bike riding when I think 'how shall I entertain myself today?' I marvel at your creativity.

Typical variation on short changing the farang! No doubt they were going to pocket the difference!

This is now a "normal" behavior in Pattaya , Samui and Phuket. does not matter if it is in Central Festival or the night market....

it is all about one thing "scam the farang! " - a recent favorite pastime for all Thai's

Been here long enough to just keep the smile..... say mai pen rai, and just leave the shop without the overpriced item, going to the next shop buying it for correct price

well ... think about it , it's the shops mistake ! sure .... but you don't own the shop , you don't control the pricing , you like that item but the stupid girl who stocks the shelves forgot to change the sticker.

Now, picture this ..... 6 - 8 people lined up at the cashier , the cashier speaks little to no english , you have asked to see the manager 3 times , it appears the manager is in the Hong Nam , the difference in price is say 100 baht or $3 ......... the other folk are giving you nasty looks ....

what do you do ? whistling.gif

you say with a friendly smile "UP YOURS!" and leave (still smiling) the shop.

I hope you don't use your middle finger while saying that. one of the 6-8 people might have a gun.

The managers at Central stores in Bangkok are top notch, bought a kitchen set with a broken plastic soup spoon. It was the last set so I asked the sales if they can replace it, she rang up the managers, the manager came and picked up a new spoon for me, he didn't even pick the cheapest one, instead he gave me a fancy stainless one.

At Rimping last week, a last remaining pack of cheese that normally sells for over 200 was on discount at 10. Or it looked like 10. Closer inspection revealed that the writer had meant to write "90" on the hand-written sticker.

As the cashiers weren't busy and looked bored, I decided to put the pack into my basket to see what happens.

Cashier tries to ring it up at "10" but the computer objects. I could've told her it was "90" but where's the fun in that? She summons adjacent cashier who was busily cleaning under her fingernail and they try again, scratch their heads, send someone to look in the cheese area. He returns to say this was the last pack. Manager is called. Manager tries to override the computer and fails. Finally, I ride to the rescue and tell them to try "90"

"Ding!" Transaction accepted. Everyone celebrates, including yours truly, who got free cheese and 90 baht worth of entertainment.

Do I need to get a life? Sadly, yes.

Oooooh! Did I detect a little sarcasm there?

I play snooker, cycle and go swimming for recreational entertainment...........but I hate shopping.

So being a jovial type of guy, I create a little entertainment for myself when shopping to make the activity less boring.

The Thais enjoy a little bit of humorous behaviour. They do have a sense of humour if you approach the problem the right way.

It's the deception of removing the notice that would get my blood boiling!

Get a grip, they're shelf stakers not international scam artists after your bank deposits.

I have stopped shopping at M & S in Festival as the employees are always rude and unhelpful. It takes forever to ring something up, once I was the only customer in the store and asked to move to different cash registers 3 times before they finally rang me up. It's not cheap and your treated like sh#@, who needs it?

You did, twice.

Wow ... this thread and the many comments ... let me know how

terribly slow it must be in Thailand about this time of the year.

no hectic as hell! but we get darn right stroppy when it comes to jaffa cakes!

Had a similar thing in Smith's in the UK. Full price was £2 reduced to £1.35. Check out said it was a mistake so I pointed out the trades dscription act to them and I got the product for the reduced price. Unfortunately Thailand doesnt have the equivalent of the Trades Description Act
