Hi, all you Thai teaching professionals. I have a Masters degree in Applied Linguistics/Teaching English as a Second Language and a PGCE, teachers' qualification from the UK, and 25 years of teaching experience, mostly at tertiary level. What are my chances of getting a decent job in Thailand at a reputable place, secondary level or tertiary? What sort of salary should I expect. Thanks.

What should you expect or what will you get???

Basically I'd 'guess' (as it's so hard to be specific here) from 25K upwards! But you should be getting nearer the 100K mark....but you may well not.

What with your degree in linguistics and with 25 years of teaching experience, it will not be difficult for you to find a decent job in Thailand. Just take a look at:

teflasia.com/ajarn/jobs/index.html

for some examples of the teaching jobs on offer. Many schools in Thailand (especially those outside of Bangkok) are in need of experienced English teachers - particularly native English speakers.

But it all depends on what kind of level of teaching you are looking to work in and what kind of salary you are expecting when you come to Thailand. If you were to work in some of the schools in Bangkok you could expect a salary of 30,000-40,000 baht plus. But maybe in the rural areas you can expect a lower salary of maybe about 25,000 -30,000 baht.

But with your experience you could always do private tutoring and charge your own price, which could be anywhere from 200 baht to 1000 baht per hour.

Wouldn't that MA in linguistics, etc., almost qualify him as an English specialist in a top-tier international school, making 125K if and only if there was such an opening?

Siritwan, thanks for the reference to ajarn dot com's database of jobs. I had to edit it so that it's not a direct URL link (ThaiVisa rules). I am not sure that the top tier schools advertise there, though. Plenty of 30K jobs.

Of course, there is always the university route, with starting salary of 27K plus whatever else they want to pay you.

Ahh... Thailand, the great leveler! Many schools will be happy to offer you twice what they would pay someone who doesn't have a Degree at all. That is, 40 or 50K...

Seriously, an international school would probably snap you up. However you should probably try to get hired before you come to Thailand. They usually pay local hires a lot less.

Bear in mind while the quals should enable him to get a wicked job at an Int. School....it is also down to how you present yourself as an individual that can get you, or not get you the job.

Met many well qualified people that due to personal reasons let themselves down in regards to this.

Good idea for international schools
