More action on counterfeit goods urged

BANGKOK: -- Private intellectual property rights protection group yesterday called on concerned governments agencies to get tough on copyright violators after authorities swooped on several shops in Bangkok's commercial district and confiscated large number of imitation goods displayed for sales.

More than 800 items of imitation products which directly violates more than 30 categories of Intellectual Property Laws valued at more than 15 million baht were confiscated by police in a raid on two shops.

Police accompanied by representatives of injured parties managed to confiscate the imitation goods and arrest three suspects.

The first shop is situated on the 2nd floor of the Grand Five Hotel while the second is the Variety Shoes Shop both located on Sukhumvit Road

An Indian national Khunikinari Akeelaysanal and Myanmar female known only as Ms. Soya were arrested along with Aporn Kerdsuk on charges of selling and in possession of imitation goods.

The swoop on the two shops was led by Mrs Mala Thangprasert, the deputy chairperson for the Private Sector Committee for the Protection of Intellectual Property Rights, as the representative for injured parties.

She beseeched the government authorities to take more direct action to quell the violation of Intellectual Property Laws in the country.

She stated that at present Bangkok alone contains no less than 50 establishments on Sukhumvit and Silom roads, Mah Boonkrong shopping center, Klong Thom market, Jatujak market and Rong Kluea border market in Sra Keaw province selling imitation or counterfeit products.

This represents an economic loss to the country valued in the millions of baht, she said while urging more tough action to tackle intellectual rights violation.

It's not that Thais don't do such things it is they just know how to avoid a visit from the BiB. Go and visit them first.

I speculate that their logic is that if you take away the copies, people will buy the real thing.......

Yes i can understand the difficulty the authorities have in identifying where these goods are coming from, and finding where they are sold.

Its not as if they have a 5km sq market flogging the stuff in bulk in Aranaprathet right under the the border and customs police nose, must be difficult to locate. And its not as if you dont have 100's of daily buses coming from all over Thailand with the express aim of buying these shonky fake designer clothes/bags etc and taking them back to sell all over Thailand.

And how many street stalls selling fake goods did they walk past on Sukhumvit Rd before they busted Grand Five Hotel and Variety shoe shop.

BANGKOK: -- Two foreigners and a Thai national were busted Tuesday with THB15 million worth of fake brand name products at their shop located in a Nana-area hotel.

Koonikkinari Akhilesa, 25 of India, Thai woman Apon Kertsuk, 35, and a Burmese woman only identified as Zora, 23, were arrested for selling counterfeit designer products at the Grand Five Hotel on Sukhumvit Soi 3/1, also known as “Soi Africa,” police said yesterday.

Just take a walk into any Mall in Thailand, and you will find counterfeits, not even sold discreetly, but openly.

The complet Chong Chom Border Market is a fake.

The country is awash with fake goods.

Do they not realise how stupid they look to the owners of these brands??

It's still common knowledge that the RTP are involved. They continue to take back-handers to look the other way and warn the Thais when a raid is about to take place. The biggest criminal organization in Thailand is the RTP so unless they can sort that our IP rights will never be solved.

3 major things wrong here...

1 - the fact that they only got those 2 locations -> the others must have "closed early for the day"

2 - Not everyone carrying a fake LV / Channel would buy a new one, so you could hardly call that financial damage, except that the fakes are so common that I wouldn't want to carry a real one in case someone thought it was fake...

3 - what about the Thai Airways Staff Markets in Jae Leng?

Is this tourism promotion ? So, now tourists know where to go and buy the right stuff!

Those that got confiscated are old stocks due for disposal.

It's just PR, to keep the Americans and Europeans happy, like those crushed CD's and burned ivory. The time to really start worrying is when the Trans Pacific Partnership deal is signed and Thais will have to pay the full Big Pharma price for drugs and medicine etc instead of being able to buy generic alternatives made here or imported from India.

That's when you'll really hear the pips start squeaking.

I'm making a list, checking it twice, to stock up on movies/tv before the big crackdown. Wouldn't bother with copies if the manufacturers charged a REASONABLE price for their products. IMHO, 1500B for the real deal movie is OTT.

May I ask, how long have you lived in Thailand?

Sitting in the bar, wearing my new 500 baht Armani jeans, and 250 baht Ralph Lauren Polo shirt, I had to glance at my 1,000 baht Rolex watch to check what time my wife said she'd collect me, and in she strolled with her Luis Vuitton Bag, her Chanel sunglasses and Christian Dior dress, looking as gorgeous as always, just as well I've seen her naked.. I don't really do fakes!!

Publicized busts like this always take place before a party of foreign dignitaries arrive. I wonder who is coming?

what on earth is intellectual property laws who makes these up. do they mean the items are not original are in fact fake or copies why don't they say so .

well it is hardly a serious crime to sell a look like Rolex watch for people who buy them for fun and would never buy an original....
