BMA gets Bt800m from Austrian firm over vehicles
The Nation

BANGKOK: -- The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) has received 20.5 million euros (Bt800 million) from Steyr-Daimler-Puch Spezialfahrzefug in accordance with the arbitration committee's order, deputy governor Asawin Kwanmuang said yesterday.

This payment is in relation to the city's procurement of 315 trucks and 30 boats for firefighting worth Bt6.687 billion.

Asawin said BMA has still not been able to get the Bt809-million parking fee cut by half.

As BMA aims to put these vehicles to use, a committee is inspecting the 170 trucks parked in Nonthaburi's Sai Noi district and it should have the results by the end of this month, he said.

The repair job is expected to cost Bt300 million, he said, adding that up to 300 local administrative bodies have applied for use of the vehicles, he added.

The procurement of the vehicles at highly inflated prices was done under the administration of former Bangkok governor Samak Sundaravej, while his successor, Apirak Kosayothin, signed the letter of credit for the payments. The vehicles have been in storage since delivery

An incredible story.
Would not it be easier to burn the taxpayers' money direct?
So they could at least save the parking fees.

Bt809-million parking fee for 315 trucks!!!!

2,5 million Baht parking fee per truck?????
Who is the recipient of this fulminating sum?
Who is responsible for this nonsense?
Who signs such contracts?

Furthermore they must now repair the new trucks for 1 million Baht each?

How can such a waste of taxpayers money go unpunished?
Minimum 10 years in prison without parole would be too mild.
The perpetrators should be liable with their private assets here.

A shame this stupidity.

Still quite a high fee but they have been there for over 10 years.. and if they had to secure the place.. just to put it back in perspective. I still think its far to high.

I don't think it's a parking fee as such. They bought the vehicles and then couldn't use them so they had to rent a huge piece of land fo storage. 50 - 100000 Baht per rai per month adds up over the years. (When you as a landlord know taxpayers are footing the bill you up your price) The whole thing is a farce.

Someone owns that parking lot and is making a LOT of money, but corruption is dead now isn't it?

Why not park them down at the Royal Thai Navy Submarine Division, it's not like they have anything to do is it? whistling.gif

Save a fortune on parking fees.

Sorry, I am lost on this one.

Can someone please explain why the Austrian supplier is at fault and has to pay this "fine"?

It goes back a few years, I believe the story was these trucks were alleged to have been made in Austria, I believe they were bought in Thailand and shipped. There for further work, when they were shipped back to Thailand the import and export dept demanded hundreds of millions in import tax that the city refused or could not pay so they have been parked up ever since, I recall the governor claiming he could not be guilty of corruption as no money had changed hands.

Just one of these really deep corruption scandals where millions are made and all the participants will be long dead before the case is resolved, if ever.

Wake up this is Thailand.
