PHANG NGA: Power in most of Phang Nga’s Muang district this morning was abruptly shut down after a petrol tanker smashed into an electrical pole and burst into flames just outside of Phang Nga Town.

Muang Phang Nga Police were notified of the potential freak accident this morning at about 6.30am and rushed to the scene, at the Ban Fai Tha intersection in Phang Nga’s Tum Naam Phud sub district, where fire fighters were already attempting to douse the flames.

At the source of the flames was a six-wheel petrol tanker with Surat Thani plates that had smashed into an electric pole on the side of the road.

The driver of the petrol tanker, who was named as 42-year-old Mr Pirapong Numwongto, had only narrowly escaped death, but suffered burns to his face, neck and chest as he escaped the inflamed vehicle, before being rushed to Phang Nga hospital for treatment.

On the opposite side of the road was another vehicle, a smashed-up four-wheeled Bronze coloured saloon car of a Chevorlet make that had rolled off down the side of the road.

The driver of the car, who was named as 39-year-old Ms Wiwatanee Ouilui, the owner of an elephant trekking company in Noppring, suffered only minor injuries.

From the initial investigation, police believe that Ms Wiwatanee had attempted to cut off the petrol tanker, which then smashed into her car before finally crashing into the electrical pole.

However, police will wait to draw their final conclusions after studying available CCTV evidence

The real Thai, lottery. maybe you die, or not!

Happens in every country!

If it exploded -- it would have been one h u g e fireball. I wonder if it really exploded or just burst into flames. The blast area would have made a serious crater, and no pic doesn't answer that question.

Typical Thai incomplete news. Again.

The police rushed to the scene only to find the fire fighters had rushed there quicker.

After all it was 06:30 am, too early for the BIB!!!

Poor reporting. It doesn't even make any mention who the guilty foreigner is.

(okay I concede that it seems I woke up in a cloud of cynicism today).

It's a miracle that nobody was killed - different time, different area and it could have been a major desaster... If it is correct that this stupid woman tried to cut off the tanker, she hopefully will receive a prison sentence and not just a cash fine along with a slap on the wrist.

Not to make light of this accident, but there's a lot of difference between the headline's "explodes" and the article's "burst into flames."

Will be back on the road by lunchtime tomorrow.

Yes, but it happens here more often, and in fact #2 on the planet for road deaths per capita.

New here?

Agree, and absolutely no pointing. How on earth am I to know what's going on without any pointing?

yery odd situation this apparently the woman driver tried to cut off the petrol tanker and was smashed into for her pains why did she want to cut off the tanker?
