Suspected sniper arrested in young businessman death

BANGKOK: -- Metropolitan police have arrested a 31-year-old man who they said is the lone sniper who shot a young businessman to death with a rifle mounted with laser sighted scope in front of his house in Nonthaburi province on May 1.

The man Kematat alias Kim Lertlakanakul confessed to the shooting of Tiwapan Pow-in, 31, after he was brought to a safe house for questioning after his arrest yesterday.

Kematat said he was a business partner of Tiwapan in luxury car import business.

However he was double-crossed by Tiwapan who declined to pay brokerage fee worth several million baht.

The business conflict prompted him to shoot Tiwapan.

But the police said they suspected more people to get involved in the murder, not only Kematat.

The arrest came after a used car dealer on Srinakarin road identified contacted the police and offered them to check a white Honda Civic car in his show room which he suspected to have been used in crimes and might involve in the death of Tiwapan as record of the car showed it has many owners.

Intensive investigation was conducted and later the car was found to be used by a suspect on the night of the shooting.

After the shooting, the red licence plate of the car was replaced with white plate, its black colour rear mirrors also were changed to white as well as the mag wheels changed from dark to white.

Tiwapan was shot dead while he was holding his two-year-old daughter in front of his house in Nonthaburi province on May 1.

The slain businessman is the nephew of acting leader of the Pheu Thai party Gen Viroj Pow-in.

He was shot with a rifle believed to be mounted with laser sighted scope as three bullets hit him on the chest and shoulder but missed his daughter who he was holding in his arms to send his two police friends off in a car in front of his house.

Three witnesses who included the two police friends saw the murder as the victim fell to the ground with his daughter after five shots were heard.

A CCTV camera near the house captured the moment when the businessman was shot and fell to the ground.

One police friend said he saw a suspect carrying a black bag, believed to have contained a gun, ran into a white Honda Civic with no licence plate and flee after the shooting.

There are some real cold hearted people out there!!

There are an awful lot of gaps to fill. What made the used car dealer on Srinakharin suspect the car was involved in the crime? How did the police know the red plates were changed to white ones, when the car was seen at the scene with no plates? Did the police find any evidence on the car linking it to the crime, and why have they not said so?

As in most things in Thailand, you will never know the true story! Everything is an enigma.
