Thailand seeks discussion with aviation regulators

The Nation

BANGKOK: -- Deputy Transport Minister Arkhom Termpittayapaisith will lead a delegation to Canada and the United States mid-June, said Civil Aviation Department Director General Somchai Phiphutthawat.

He is scheduled to brief the chief of the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) in Montreal on Thailand’s actions and progress in addressing airline safety regulations.

Then, he would fly to the US to meet Michael Huerta, the administrator of the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). This is ahead of FAA’s scheduled mission to review Thailand’s safety regulations in July.

Somchai said that the discussion should result in greater understanding and the FAA may agree to postpone the scheduled check.

The safety concerns were raised in late March during the ICAO’s audit of the Civil Aviation Department, which was given a 90-day grace period to comply with international standards.

South Korea and Japan were the first to react to these concerns, with the orders that affected the operations of some airlines based in Thailand.

The Thai authorities are now building up the regulatory team to meet ICAO’s demand. The United Nations’ agency is the international body that ensures safe and orderly growth in global civil aviation.

Given the he relations with the US right now they a e beating a dead drum if they think they can sway the FAA. They are merciless and air safety is nor bought or exchanged like in Asia. They need to fix the problems before the FAA gets here

A spokesperson said "We are delighted to report that the FAA have said they are more than satisfied with our efforts and the Thai Aviation Authority is a shining example of how such issues should be addressed. Shit I'm reading from the wrong script. This one was intended for after the meeting. Somebody move my PA to an inactive post PDQ".

I read somewhere a couple of days ago that they are also looking for an extension from Japan and of course are confident they will be understood.

After all the years of sitting on their hands they still don't get it and that other countries are serious. Naturally these countries will be unreasonable if they dont agree to further time extensions.

What's the Thai for "junket"?

Perhaps that's what the ICAO will tell Thai Airways to do with some of their fleet. Junk it!
