Holiday Inn Sunday Brunch had some sashimi and they have poached whole salmon. I haven't seen any place that has an abundance of smoked salmon though. the most I have seen at a few different places is a few slices.

Cheers, I also found a recommendation to "Sun Tori" on another thread and it's located down a soi off the north side of the moat. Seems like it will be incredibly good quality if the cook catches the fish himself, thats awesome will have to check it out.

Oxymoron. That's the term to use when putting 'buffet' and 'quality' together. Better to say, buffet and quantity.

Not true in the slightest. There a buffets where they have their own group of chefs for each food group, last good one I went to like this was Hilton Buffet in Pattaya, great sushi and sashimi, had 4 chefs working on preparing this alone more attention to preparation and quality of ingredient than a normal restuarant. Just because you only frequent a $5 all you can eat buffet doesnt mean thats all that exists, ignorant and stupid comment.

Duang Tawan near the night market on Sunday nights is great.

Sashimi and lots lots more.

Quality food for 390 baht ++

If it's just smoked salmon you want, Makro has frozen packs for about 100 baht for 100 grams.

I am afraid overall he is right. The good ones are few and far between.

The best I've been to for seafood was in Cairns, Australia. They had mud crabs, lobster, prawns, bugs, scallops. You name it, if it came out of the sea it was there (to avoid argument that was bit of a generalization but it was a good spread). But back then I was buying banana prawns off the boat for $2 a kilo.

I've been looking for the same experience ever since with fading hope.

The Horizon Resort has an excellent buffet and not too expensive, ฿299.

Everyone has different expectations and definitions of good as they do of expensive. I don't like buffets for many reasons even some of the extravagant ones in some of the fine hotels of the world.

Personally eating a bit of everything is not appetizing and at buffets I tend to over eat. But most good hot food, of course not stews etc, are only good when cooked to order.

But here in Thailand a Western food buffet is a scary thought!

That being said what about the D2 Sunday brunch, anybody have any first hand experience dining there?

Smoked salmon makes me weak at the knees. It was a long time ago but I remember the Siam City Hotel in BKK had a great buffet with Smoked Salmon not sure if its still there. I was at a work do in Singapore once and while chatting I could see the Smoked Salmon in the corner of my eye and just melted from there. Its also quite nice in pasta with cream and you can add mushrooms, asparagus, capers and Parmesan cheese and a drop of red. After that massage with Noi = what more do you need in this life?

Have been once to D2 Sunday brunch and will not revisit. Place was absolutely packed with guests extending into the lobby area but no idea why. Food was OK but nothing more and far better deals close by.

Le Meridien is 850baht with discount card available on the day and includes imported oysters and other quality fare and so much better than D2.

Bought some salmon in Makro yesterday and down in price from last week but that might just be the Mae Sai Makro. My Thai wifes favourite food , the butter drips of her chin when she eats it. In fact a couple of years ago I said " Is salmon better then sex ? " She said " It is with you dear " How cute is that ?

Cheers, I also found a recommendation to "Sun Tori" on another thread and it's located down a soi off the north side of the moat. Seems like it will be incredibly good quality if the cook catches the fish himself, thats awesome will have to check it out.

for sure !

A cook in Cm catch a smoked salmon by himselfe !! 55555555

he catch it in a fridge or vacuum bag in BKK !!

Well apparently he goes salt water deep sea fishing 3 days a week, so I assume flies out of Chiang Mai to some island to fish, then comes back with his catch and serves them up.

he want " high quality " Canada - wild river catched - you will ever get in LOS ?

Here price might be 20 $ for 100 gramms,

in thai you will get a red painted Ocean salmon for 100gm / 100 baht !!

but a thai would add a 100 gm hot hot red chilly for better taste !

Whats thai taste is worth when they ad chilli chilli chilli we all know !!

( spicy or not spicy seems the only taste of 99,9% of that inhabitants )

Kantary Hills Soi 12 Nimmanheimen has a salad buffet on Monday and Friday nights. The buffet includes smoked salmon. 190 baht, worth it for the salmon alone.

I mostly agree - at least in this part of the world, but back in about 1994, there was almost no decent Western food in Chiang Mai and especially desserts. The Westin Hotel started having really good buffets with dozens of great desserts and they were only something like 150 baht. It was great and everyone in town went there. Christmas dinner was truly amazing and only 500 baht back then.

99.99 percent of the world's salmon is now farmed. If it is wild, the establishment will be advertising it, and charging a premium for it. Like locally caught coho, sockeye or king salmon. But that is rare, seasonal and available in only some areas. All the rest is farmed. 1% of that is sustainably farmed. But you have to know your suppliers. Otherwise it is toxic as hell.

Toxic how? Some factual information please. Also, refer to the Paracelsus maxim: " The dose makes the poison ".

I found the German brunch buffet south of town, Auf der Au, to have some of the best western food in Lanna land. And I am not even German.

At least it's still a fish discussion and not just another one with a few members arguing between themselves.

As for you assumption, as they often can be, it's wrong.

The Sushi Chef/Owner goes out near BKK, I believe Samut Sakran but maybe Sriacha

It's available at Dhara Dhevi weekend buffet although the price for that buffet may mean for some you have eat a kg of it to make it worth :)

This is the best buffet in town that I have been to without a shadow of doubt but you do need to take the platinum card along but if the OP is seriously looking for quality salmon and sashimi then head here Sunday at 1200.

Dont profess to be an expert on Japanese or any other food but the ancient taste buds tell miss this is quality and maybe as a special occasion actually worth the price but for a once a month treat I'll stick with the Meridien.

I wont post the price but if your considering heading here then consider going all the way and include the free flow wine option.

Quality at a price.
