Sorry, sure this has been asked 100 times. But my friends visa ran out yesterday so tehnically overstaying. Can he go to immigration, pay the fine and still extend the visa. Or does he need to leave the country, pay the overstay and come back?

Realy urgent!

Thanks

I assume it was his permit to stay that ran out not his visa.that ran out yesterday.

Immigration will normally do an extension after paying the fine for a few days of overstay. It will be 500 baht for one day of overstay.

Great, thank you! :) No it was a visa on arrival, 30 days, looking to extend for 30 days, but obviously already in overstay situation. Just didn't want to send him up there if not 100%. Thank you

NOT a "visa on arrival" which are only available to the citizens of a few counties, cost 1000 Bht and provided a 15 day stay.

Your friend received a "visa exempt" entry ...........................................

It would have been the permission to stay he was given based on a visa exempt entry that ran out.

He didn't have a visa and visas only get you into the country. Your stay in the country is determined either by a permission to stay or extension of stay given by immigrations when you enter. If he obtains an extension, it will be an extension of the permission to stay, not an extension of a visa.

So, can the OP's buddy extend an already expired visa exempt entry on paying the daily overstay charges?

If yes, how many days maximum can he expect to get?

Hey OP here, yes it was fine. Went to Patong immigration, he paid the overstay 500b (unlike free day no fine grace you get if at the airport), extended VOA for another 30 days, no drama at all. Out with in 5 mins.

Thanks for all your advice.

A VOA NOT was extended because the friend never had such a visa to begin with ..........................And "visas" are never extended !

Sure, but most people call them visas, visa on arrival, tourist visa etc. I'm sure that's not the technical term but will be understood by more people than permission to stay.
