UNICEF gives 3 mobile libraries to Mae Hong Son schools

MAE HONG SON, 17 June 2015 (NNT) - UNICEF has handed over three mobile libraries to the Mae Hong Son Primary Educational Service Area Office to foster learning for students in remote areas.

The handing-over ceremony of the three mobile libraries was chaired by Mae Hong Son governor Surapol Panas-amphon. Also witnessing the ceremony were teachers, students and educational personnel of the Mae Hong Son Primary Educational Service Area Office 1.

One of the donated library vans is for the Mae Hong Son Primary Educational Service Area Office 1 while the other two are given to the Primary Educational Service Area Office 2. The library vans will be sent out to different communities and schools to facilitate the learning of children in distant areas.

Mae Hong Son’s mountainous terrain was found to have limited access to basic education among children in faraway villages. A joint survey between UNICEF and Mae Hong Son Primary Educational Service Area Office found that as many as 1,250 children have yet to go to schools.

The mobile library project is part of the mission to extend educational opportunities to children throughout the province.

Drought spares East, Northeast

BANGKOK, 17 June 2015 (NNT) - The eastern and northeastern regions were not seriously affected by drought, Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Cooperatives Amnuay Patise said on Wednesday. Rice farmers in the central region are still discouraged from growing in-season rice.

The deputy minister elaborated that there was no shortage of water for consumption and agriculture in the eastern region since the region did not use much water from irrigation systems. Likewise, the northeastern region did not use water from large dams but relied on rainfall and natural water sources. Despite a shortage of rain during this period, the two regions would not be affected as much as the provinces in the Chao Phraya river basin, the deputy minister said.

Mr. Amnuay also stressed that rice farmers should avoid planting in-season rice in 22 Chao Phraya river basin provinces due to small volumes of water in major dams and less rain this year. The government had instructed the provinces to continuously send in information related to the drought situation and ask farmers to delay planting water-intensive crops until late July when higher rainfall was expected, said Mr. Amnuay.
