PM: Govt. is urgently working on ways to combat droughts

BANGKOK, 20 June 2015 (NNT) - Prime Minister General Prayut Chan-o-cha has reassured the public that his administration is urgently working on ways to fight the ongoing drought.

The Prime Minister said during his ‘Returning Happiness to the People’ program last night that the drought-triggered water shortage had ravaged farmlands in several provinces and looked imminent to intensify.

He attributed droughts to wide-ranging causes but identified climate change as the major one. The Prime Minister stated Thailand needs to embark on long-term preventive policy, reforestation and other forest conservation campaigns.

He also indicated the government has laid down the policy to combat droughts, such as building more reservoirs and renovating existing dams. Gen. Prayut stressed all of these schemes can only be achieved with transparency, urging related civil servants to refrain from corruptions and to think about the benefits of the nation and its people before their own.

Stricter MERS surveillance conducted at Chong Mek Border Check Point

UBON RATCHATHANI, 20 June 2015 (NNT) - Director of the Office of Disease Prevention and Control Region 7, Ubon Ratchathani has assigned International Disease Control Station located at Chong Mek Border Check Point in Sirindhorn District to step up MERS surveillance after the first MERS case was confirmed in Thailand on Thursday.

The station is now strictly scanning persons coming from countries in risk of MERS outbreak, like the Middle East and South Korea. The official said any traveler with high temperature will be admitted to Sirindhorn Hospital for diagnosis. If the MERS test turns out negative, they will be allowed to go home but are still under health followups by the hospital.

Health officials at the Border Check Point are providing advice for people of how to prevent themselves from the deadly virus. The Director stressed that these steps are taken as preventive measures, reflecting that Thai officials are not complacent of the situation. People should not panic as the case in Thailand was still far from an outbreak.

The first MERS case was confirmed by the Public Health Ministry on Thursday. He was a 75-year-old foreign man who came to Thailand on 15 June. The man is now under the care of Bamrasnaradura Institute with a stable condition. 59 others who were in contact with him are being monitored.
