Police inspect the room of a new monk who attempted to light the monastery on fire in Songkhla, 27 June 2015.

SONGKHLA — Police in southern Thailand say they have arrested a teenage monk who allegedly attempted to burn down his monastery after smoking marijuana early this morning.

The 16-year-old, who entered the monkhood the day before, reportedly smashed Buddha figurines and other objects in his room at Sri Withetsanghkaram Temple at around 3:00am, and then attempted to set the monastery on fire, said Pol.Col. Kittichai Sankhathaworn, superintendent of Sadao Police Station in Songkhla province.

where was monitor for new/upset/high/withdrawal/ or what ever the reason. supervision is not a strong suit of our society today, no t many seem real interested in working out a possi9ble solution that does not include violence in some form.

Don't they vet people before accepting them as novice monks? Here we got a drug addict. Wonder where he had got his joints while in a temple.

Here we got a drug addict? On the evidence of smoking marijuana once? Must have been top quality Thai Buddha.

So many kids get sent to the temple once they finish school, the parents see it as a way of sorting them out from the usual behavior issues.

No vetting done, kid goes in and gets frustrated........next stop......Army.

Here we have a teenager just been sent to a Wat. I'd love to know more about why he was there in the first place that might offer more of an insight to why this happened.

Chances are there are underlying issues that contributed more to this sort of behavior, given that THC is prescribed legally in various places as a sedative for medical conditions.

I see you know absolutely nothing about ganja. It is a non-addictive drug.

Perhaps this kid was forced to join monkhood by his family and he simply did what so many thai do by using destructive means to solve his problem

We don't know the background to this story but from personal experience I think it's true the temple is often the dumping ground for kids that parents can't take care of.

A long time ago I started living with a woman with 2 kids, at that time she had a daughter aged 10 and a son aged 15. The son had been a novice monk for 5 years, once we'd settled down he came to visit us and broke down in tears saying he wanted to live with us and disrobe. The poor kid wanted a home, a family, but his mother wasn't having it, claiming she couldn't handle working and living in a flat with 2 teens.., in a word she rejected her own son.

Our relationship only lasted a few months but I'll never forget that poor boy, crying in his robes, just wanting a loving family.

The damage done.

One believes they have enough to annoy posters, don't give them more.

Amazing how some people react when they're on the inside of the scam looking out.

Scam? Please explain your absurd idea. From you other posts you have absolutely no respects for others' religion, or is it just Buddhism?

If you don't understand that religion is a scam, that's what we call a personal problem.

A bit more background to this kid.

After treatment for drug addiction he became attached to a staff member in a restaurant. When he found out she had a husband he lost his temper, attacked and hurt the husband.

Hoping religion could improve his temperament and mind he decided to ordain and study for 2 weeks, however he lost control after indulging in some grass, damaging his quarters.

Maybe a little jail time will correct his attitude. Am I right in assuming that the monastery was the alternative to that after the assault?

The chances are very high he has been charged with a drug offence, if he goies and be a monk, the Thai procicuters wotn continue chasing him. Just has to wait hi time out.

Always a viable solution to allay one's temper I'd say. Instead of locking the boy up with harden criminals an anger management course should be in order.

I think the temples are going to have to do a better job of vetting the candidates for monk hood. Is anyone allowed? Will they accept any dreg from anywhere? And parents need to stop telling Thai boys they are special. They are most definitely not special. They are ordinary by any standards. They need to start telling Thai boys that your sister is better than you. She is smarter, she is more motivated, she is simply better and stronger. Prove yourself. Prove you are a worthy person.
