RID says central region will see 100 days of rain beginning late in July

BANGKOK, 29 June 2015 (NNT)-The Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives has held a meeting to correctly address the water shortage crisis; it has also forecast that the Central Plains will see 100 days of rain, beginning in the latter part of July, this year.

Chairing the meeting with the Royal Irrigation Department (RID), Minister of Agriculture and Cooperatives Pitipong Puengboon Na Ayuttaya, said the RID and the Department of Agricultural Extension had been instructed to create a map of rice growing areas along the Chao Praya River.

According to Mr. Pitipong, the map will provide a clearer picture of how much water is needed, and for the Ministry to keep water usage under control. Meanwhile, RID Director- General Lertwiroj Kowattana said it was likely that rain would begin to fall in the low lying areas of the Chao Praya River at the beginning of the third week of July.

His department is ready to store and release the water as deemed necessary for farming activities and the sustainability of domestic consumption, said the Director-General.
