BANGKOK: -- SIX FOREIGN fugitives have been arrested for a variety of different crimes, said Pol Maj-General Thamrong Saengwattanakul, commander of Immigration Police Division 3 yesterday.

The six were named as Russian woman Natallia Makian; Russian man Dmitrii Rodionov, 38; Taiwanese man Chen Hung Hsun, 34; Taiwanese woman Hsiao Min Chu, 48; German man Mario Wilhelm Schaefer; and Wen Liping, 32, a Chinese national.

Makian was arrested on Sunday in Chon Buri's Bang Lamung district. Makian and three accomplices - two of whom are already in custody, namely British national Thor Fenripallson Hallan and Russian national Denis Zabodaev - allegedly extorted money and valuables worth Bt100,000 from a French businessman in May, Thamrong said. The businessman reportedly lost another Bt200,000 in damages and lost revenue when the business was forced to close.

Interpol wanted Rodionov for alleged fraud and causing damages worth Bt25 million. He was arrested in Phuket's Muang district.

Chen Hung Hsun, who was wanted in Taiwan for the alleged possession of Ketamine - a dissociative anaesthetic drug - was arrested in Bangkok's Huai Kwang district.

Hsiao Min Chu was nabbed in Ubon Ratchathani's Trakan Phutphon district. She was wanted for an alleged Bt62-million embezzlement case in Taiwan.

Schaefer was wanted for allegedly breaking into a Munich home, using a fake gun to detain the homeowner's son and extorting 2.5 million euros (Bt95 million), though the hostage later escaped. Schaefer was arrested in Phrae's Den Chai district. Lastly, Wen Liping - wanted for allegedly duping 500 people to invest a total of Bt50 million in a bogus company's aluminium trade - was arrested in Bangkok on June 15.

There're hundreds, if not thousands more like them hiding in plain sight.... so much so that Thailand

should consider a special visa class for fugitive of the law and run of the mill criminals....

TAT media campaigns definately work. Look at the fugutives flocking to visit Amazing Thailand. Three thumbs up!

Considering the decorations in the photo, the should give these events a name, like "Thailand Criminals in Captivity Festival". They could have parades in major cities with the (un)fortunate captives walking up front, with their T-shirts, sunglasses and all, handing out confiscated monies and other stuff to the crowds. A monthly event wouldn't be too much, and make it a public holiday too, to boost revenue from tourism. "Thailand, the Hub of Captivating Festivals"?

They could even have special parades for corrupt public servants, one for politicians obviously, no other qualities needed than actually being or having been a politician. And so on... ;)

One of the BIB in the background also has no jacket on.

Perhaps the lady was "negotiating" the terms of her release with him when they got the photo-call and forgot their tops.

The issue of a Non-Inmate visa has been already proposed by the Immigration department.

So Germans, Russians and Taiwanese are termed men and women but the Chinese are "nationals".

Is this some new gender law in china?

No more sexes please, we're Chinese.

Taiwanese are not necessarily Chinese. They seem rather keen NOT to be.

Its funny because in the photo she is looking at the group, as if wondering what happened to her T-shirt!

I never said Taiwanese were Chinese.

Wrong. Taiwan actually calls itself "Republic of China". They consider themselves the "real" Chinese.

quality tourists, they propaly will all be back in Thailand again in 12 months.

But only if their home countries give them a slap on the wrist instead of a real 'deterrent' sentence.

People on here also seem to forget that they were caught in Thailand but were able to escape detection and freely leave their home countries.

Thailand is famous for being a criminal junk pot all along!

Now if Thailand could make a lot more of these arrests Thailand would lose its top destination ranking for criminals on the run. Not sure TAT will support that.

Thailand appear to be catching more than some countries. After all every criminal caught in Thailand is one the their home country failed to catch and allowed to travel.

Immigration wants a criminal record check for anyone applying for an O-A visa. Maybe they should extend that courtesy to all applicants. Maybe even the visa-on-arrival quality tourists should also be asked to produce the evidence that they are "clean".
