Farmer commits suicide due to withered crop
THE NATION

NAKHON PHANON: -- A 71-YEAR-OLD rice farmer in Nakhon Phanom's Muang district allegedly shot himself dead after watching his 18-rai paddy crop wither away due to the severe drought, police said yesterday.

The farmer's body was found outside his hut in Tambon Ban Pheung at 9.45pm on Wednesday. After his son testified that two days ago his father had expressed stress over the failed crop, police put the death down to suicide. The relatives did not refute this conclusion and collected the body for religious rites.

Meanwhile, the pressure of tap water in Petchabun province will be further lowered from 10am to 3pm from July 8 because the Padaeng reservoir, which supplies the waterworks system, has dropped very low, provincial waterworks office manager Theerawat Doungthong said. Water pressure in the province has been kept low from 10pm to 4pm since March.

In Nakhon Phanom's Ban Phaeng district, the Nong Kreu Khao pond that feeds the municipality's water system has dried up, with villagers lamenting the lack of water for farming.

Artificial rainmaking operations have yielded downpours in Nakhon Sawan province, though similar operations upstream to refill Phitsanulok's Kwai Noi Dam has yielded little rainfall. Meanwhile, farmers in Phitsanulok's Bang Rakham district have resorted to pawning their valuables so they can have water pumped into their fields.

I'm waiting to see the first Post or other Anti-democrat sources blaming the Yingluck Govt, Thaksin, et all for this suicide......They did that in spades as one of the corner-stones of their demonization campaign against the Rice Subsidy program...Using 'suicides' was one of their favorite innuendo's.....Preventing/obstructing payment to farmers, and then blaming Yingluck for not paying.

I mean if impeachment stuff of the previous elected Govt. can be retroactive, suicides such as this can have retroactive causes also, can't they?

In 2014 a few farmer suicides were reported. The usual group of frothers were fast to blame the PTP and Yingluck.

Using their twisted deficient logic at the time, the Military rulers are to blame for this suicide.

Just as I didn't play the blame game with the government in 2014, it shouldn't be done now.

Except that entirely what you just did!

The farmers were advised months ago that there would not be enough water!

Oh kid.. facts you don't like them

Farmers killed themselves because YL did not pay for the rice. She stepped down without making the necessary arrangements (stupidity .. negligence.. criminal.. take your pick) So yes there is blame there

Blaming the government for drought.. no way you can pin that on the government. (unless they mismanaged the drought just like you can mismanage a flood.. guess who did that)

so where are the magical planes that create rain ? or they only fly out when it is heavely clouded so they can claim success for an imminent rain fall ?

Duh you can only seed clouds.. No point going out UNLESS there are the right kind of cloud.

"Farmers killed themselves because YL did not pay for the rice."

"better worry about the lost money to the Shinawatras in rice scam + other corruptions".

Sometimes the Opposition thinks they can conjure up any silliness and innuendo's, and many will consider it gospel. (farmers killing themselves over Govt. policy) plus (other drive-by smears as per quote above..Post #14) ..................they are correct about that.

I wonder how many corn farmers in Iowa have killed themselves, blaming generous Govt. Ag. subsidy programs?....... Sort of puts this Opposition folderol in perspective.

Preventing/obstructing payment to farmers, and then blaming Yingluck for not paying was their MO.

Yep, no worries. But lets hope the sea levels don't go down as much as the fresh water levels, otherwise they'll be .... useless.

Honestly they are NOT going to be much use in the Bay of Thailand anyway!

Regardless of sea levels sally, they will still be useless.

The so-called "lost money" estimated at 700 million baht resulting from the Yinluck rice pledge scheme was borrowed by the Junta by issuing 10-year treasury bonds and paid to Thai farmers. So the money STAYED in Thailand. farmers spend that money and that helps the Thai economy.

The Junta will buy the subs by again issuing 7-10 year treasury bonds but that money WILL GO to China and that helps the Chinese economy.

The Junta's misplaced priorities for the Thai economy is worrisome.

Again someone who did not know the facts.. not strange for a red supporter.

Even before she stepped down they were months to late with paying. (so that was BEFORE) she stepped down.

Then she could have taken steps to loan money to pay the farmers while she was in power and then step down, she did not after she stepped down the government could not loan anymore because that is not legal. It was her stupidity / negligence that she made no provisions for that. But even before that point the farmers were paid far to late.

Just look it up.. you might learn something.

All this costs money that unfortunately these poor rice farmers do not have. They have planted 2nd and 3rd crops over the years with impunity now the writing is on the wall "no water" a hard lesson to be learned.

Preventing/obstructing payment to farmers, and then blaming Yingluck for not paying.

Even to the point of protesting in front of Banks, all banks, trying to close them down to prevent paying.

Them's the facts. No amount of historical revisionist spin will alter that.

Reminds me of the campaign demonizing PTP/Yinglucks effective management of the flood disaster. Management that was equal to or better than any other instance of disaster management internationally....New Orleans anyone?.

That campaign and this payment obstruction, all geared toward trying to make her Government fail, or make it appear as such.

Op-positional obstructionism, non-parliamentary engagement and inciting like-minded elements of themselves into the streets.....All of it reflected in the article - Post #31..If all of this was so disastrous, why was the Opposition afraid of an election. That would have been the normal path. Their fear of an election is all one needs to know when considering the veracity of opposition noise.

Again, Opposition/anti-democrat mantra's being accepted at face value and taken as gospel, without considering the self-serving source.
