Last Saturday, on World Clean Up Day, many organizations, especially those who are involved with the environment, joined hands to clean up beaches or collect underwater garbage. This included Phuket and Krabi. Our special report today highlights the garbage collection or Big Cleaning Day in Krabi, and tomorrow we highlight Phuket. Let’s go to Krabi now:.

These two foreign tourists, who were visiting Ao Nang in Krabi, joined the local group who organized the Big Cleaning Day. They picked up rubbish that was carelessly dumped or washed in from who knows where, and they put loads in black plastic bags for disposal.

It was the same for these groups of local school children from Bang Ao Nang and Ban Klong Haeng who happily took part in the beach cleaning activities for better and tidy beaches near their homes. The event was arranged on Saturday by the Ao Nang Operators Environmental Protection Club. Sophon On-thong, the Club’s chairman explained that it not only promoted natural resources care among local tourism operators and young people, but was also in honor of His Majesty the King’s 60th Anniversary of His Accession to the Throne.

One of the foreign operators, Michael Wallentin, from Denmark, with a dive company here, and also a club member, explained how important the event was and their achievements of the day:

Ironically, these piles of waste left on the beautiful beach of Ao Nang were in fact caused by human people who exploit nature. These included a pile of cigarette butts near a concrete wall and plastic items. They accumulated into over 100 kilograms or rubbish collected. The participants of the activity pointed out that the environmental care will only work if common awareness is raised among all parties.

This Italian resident and Clean Up volunteer sincerely expressed his firm intentions:

Ao Nang, and Nopparat Tara are famous among Thai and foreign tourists. Krabi has over 2 million visitors per year. From this point, tourists can go to explore the famous Splitting Sea and Rai Lay.

The Big Cleaning Day which public and private sectors as well as local education institutes arranged, was another activity which shows good intentions of some of mankind in caring and looking after the beautiful nature they are relying on or living with.
