Thailand's Rising Crackdown on Dissent Sparks Coup Criticism
The junta is tightening its grip on power.
By Shawn W. Crispin

BANGKOK: -- The detention of 14 student activists in Thailand underscores the ruling junta’s rising crackdown on dissent and free expression, signaling a deeper descent into strongman-led authoritarian rule. While army commander cum Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-ocha has strongly consolidated his rule after a year in power, his government is nonetheless tightening its grip amid plans to delay elections deep into 2016.

The activists, 11 of them university students, were arrested on June 26 while staging a small, peaceful pro-democracy demonstration in Bangkok. They each face up to seven years in prison on charges of sedition for “inciting unrest” and violating the junta’s strict ban on political gatherings of more than five people, according to reports. Their detention has sparked public protests, including the spontaneous posting of anti-coup notes near a Bangkok skytrain station, and strong newspaper editorials criticizing Prayuth’s increasingly iron-fisted rule.

Deputy Prime Minister and legal expert Wissanu Krea-ngam was quoted saying the activists should stand trial in a military rather than civil court because they violated a National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO) order. The activists will go before a military court on Tuesday after 12 days in pre-trial detention. The activists’ defense lawyers have likened their case to the arrests and military court trial of 18 student activists in October 1976, a flashpoint moment in the country’s long struggle for democracy.

all students who are breaking the law should be expelled from the university and banned from getting higher education for life. Students should study but not take part in political protesting. And there are a lot of youth in Thailand who want to be on there places in uni - to study.

Turning uglier by the minute, me says. sad.png These people really do forget their own history, even recent events as the massacre in 1976 is completely forgotten. coffee1.gif

The Thammasat Massacre is not forgotten. It is against the "law" to mention it. Very different.

All soldiers who break the law and commit treason and sedation by staging a coup should be expelled from the military and imprisoned for life, with all their ill gotten assets confiscated. coffee1.gif

Tell us you're joking, please. It's not very good satire, of course, so the suspicion is that you're actually serious with this totalitarian rant..

Interesting. Perhaps, if you had the benefit of a higher education you would understand the implications of your comment.

Education, knowledge and wisdom have an interesting relationship. And yes, we don't all share the same points of view. The world would be very bland if we did,

However, it is reasonable to assume that some expressed outrageous extreme view is not the product of a rational, balance, educated mind. If it is, then most likely it's being expressed for a mischievous reason.

Some of most oppressive dictators and their supporters over the years have been very well educated and undoubtedly intelligent. Sadly not rational and maybe psychotic, psychopathic or sociopaths.

So what are you accusing these particular students and those who sympathise with them of?

you forgot to mention one small thing - outrageous extreme view FOR YOU, brainwashed by decades of left liberal propaganda, which indoctrinates people that A PRIORI protestors are always right and authorities are always wrong. that's why people like you defend culprits but not policemen who prosecute them.

I am sympathetic to the suggestion that those guilty of committing "sedation" should be severely punished, whether with a thumbscrew or a comfy cushion is for further consideration.

What is immediately apparent is that the military government has grotesquely overreacted though I have just been told that common sense is prevailing.Yet there is a sense in which the military's instincts were sound in cracking down heavy handedly on a few protesting students.Courage is infectious and every revolution has small beginnings. While there is no prospect of a revolution in Thailand yet what we felt in this recent incident was the government's almost indiscernible stench of fear.

The next flashpoint will have nothing to do with the reds, it will be students, fighting for a vote

Read the other news....a foreign group steers up problems......Some students will still remember how the reds shot at them.....

How much longer does this topic go on before someone steps over the edge?

The leadership is becoming more petulant of criticism everyday. Sorry guys, the genie is out of the bottle and it will be much harder to put back in than it was in the good old days.

Farewell free speech - such as it was - in Thailand.

You either genuinely don't know right from wrong and can't tell the difference between law and order and a fascist police state, which usually has neither law nor order; or are just out for a bit of baiting for fun, sad if that's true.

No I don't believe violent anti-social intimidation protests are right. People should have the right to protest peacefully - not lob grenades, throw blood and excrement or machine gun houses. The police must maintain peace and do so within the law using reasonable force prescribed by law.

Other wise you have communist/fascist states where any who dare protest or speak out against dictatorial governments are not tolerated and often treated violently or disappeared.

Perhaps that's the norm where you come from.

Speaking languages does not equate to intelligence, knowledge and wisdom per se. The ability to speak a particular language is not the measure of IQ.

However, English is the premier language for education, science, business, politics etc in the world. The level of competence in English is an indicator, and no more than an indicator, in a person's level of education.

Nothing arrogant but more a comment on your personal drive and acceptance for poor standards.

If we are discussing Timmy T's education, all I will say since I cannot know what that was, is that his syntax is not that of a native English speaker. and if Timmy T. were to come back and say that I'm wrong, that he is a native English speaker, then I would state that dear Timmy's 'education' was a dubious undertaking. No matter what, Timmy T. gets this OP's and thread's "Fascism Is Our Friend" Award.

But first let us know your definition of "law".

Does it include arbitrary regulations issued by a military junta who grabbed power at gun point?

And if yes, if a burglar points a gun at you and you protest, can he shoot you and call it a legal execution?

I am not a fascist nor an imperialist, but you are wrong. English is the most widely spoken language in the world.
