I notice Thai school kids often go to school wearing scout/ army etc uniforms. Do they have those activities as part of school curriculum, or are they after school extras?

Wish we could have had them as classes when I was at school.

One day a week they dress as Scouts, Guides or Nurses.

Another day they wear traditional costume

then there is the sports day outfit

only two days in school uniforms.

Unlike in my country where scouts teach about nature, camping, hiking, doing good deeds and patriotism, in Thailand it seems to bee more of a military training thing.

Mostly they practice marching.

Once or twice a year, they will camp out at the school.

This consists of pitching tents indoors in meeting halls and classrooms and spending the night!

A week ago at my daughters school, they canceled classes for two afternoons to practice marching in formation in preperation for a big scouting event where students from several schools met and marched together.

The day of the big event, they canceled classes again and held their marching event on the asphalt parking area of a government building.

The temperature was 106 f or 41c that morning.

Over 20 students passed out or fainted from the heat!

But, they kept marching!

I think the children would have been better off and safer staying in class without the military type marching last week.

Can you tell I am not a big fan of the Thai scouting program?

The other day saw a chubby little fella in scout uniform, wide-brimmed hat and metal-rimmed glasses. Looked like a miniature Teddy Roosevelt circa Rough Rider days.

But of course you do realise the whole premise of the worldwide scout movement was actually to prepare someone for the military the camping/climbing stuff and the patriotic brainwashing and provided a front for pedo's

Just one of the many reasons I took my kids out of the Thai school system.

I agree with that, but I never saw or heard of any problems with scoutmasters where I grew up. Perhaps that's a problem of your nationality, but not of all.

Scouting was fun for me- loved it and was sorry when I had to give it up at 10 years old.

I assume your a USer and a simple wiki search will reveal reports of over 2000 cases of child abuse in the US in the boy scout movement

So yes it appears the US boyscout movement is full of pedo's as well

But nice try at the " my countries better than yours" but one suspect before opening ones gob, at least try and check your facts

There is nothing in his post that remotely indicates that he is from the U.S.

He may be, but I have no reason to assume that and neither do you!

That fact that you would state such an unfounded assumption leads me to believe you have some sort of bias against Americans.

It also leads me to believe you are some sort of A$$.

Lets go back to the origin of Scounting. Baden Powel....who developed the Boy Scout movement as a paramiltary training organisation for children to develop their skills in military like activities.

On his return from Africa in 1903, Baden-Powell found that his military training manual, Aids to Scouting, had become a best-seller, and was being used by teachers and youth organisations.[30] Following his involvement in the Boys' Brigade as Brigade Secretary and Officer in charge of its scouting section, with encouragement from his friend, William Alexander Smith, Baden-Powell decided to re-write Aids to Scouting to suit a youth readership. In August 1907 he held a camp on Brownsea Island to test out his ideas. About twenty boys attended: eight from local Boys' Brigade companies, and about twelve public school boys, mostly sons of his friends.

and yet they can come out of school without the simplest notion of how to tie a knot that can be undone. I never let the buggers near my truck when I am loading stuff.

Wow supoose you see a commie behind every plant pot as well, based on this posters previous posts i am pretty certain he is a USer

Well this is a new one, being branded anti American because i have stated there have been over 2000 cases of reported child abuse in the US scout movement and this is verifiable BTW if you wish to debate BTW

Did you learn that swear from your scoutmaster ?

Absolutely NOT and thank goodness for it.

I said I never experienced a problem with scoutmasters when I was in Scouts and that is the truth.

Scouting was an absolute blast for me until about 13 and I found girls. The leaders were excellent. Fathers in the troop largely supportive. We went on tons of trips, even the intl jamborees.

Teaching, Id thought about starting up a real intl scout troop. It would draw all the youth from.greater Bangkok and run like a US troop with English as primary language. One that camps and backpacks takes intl trips...kids would do love it instead of the lameness called scouting present. Alas...too much work.

My love for outdoors, adventure, backpacking, camping all came from scouting.

People that look to scoutmasters and see creepers, well that's pretty sad. No doubt same guys that look at Thai women and see nothing but gold diggers and whores. Their pathetic lifetime of limited social interactions just sees the anamoly, the worst in humanity ehich ironically they if they examined thrmselves, share a lot with.

"Robot training" obey/ conform

Correct.

And get used to taking orders and marching for the day you may be conscripted.

They send the kids to slaughter first, doubt they will call me at my age
