Anyone used the Seresto anti-tick and flea collar on their dog?

Hi there

Has anyone used the Seresto anti-tick and flea collar on their dog?

The collar is made by Bayer and promises 8 months protection against tick and fleas.

The vet recommended it to me last week and although I think this particular vet is pretty good, I wouldn't be surprised if he's on a fat commission for this product as it has a price tag of 1,200 Baht! (that said, if it works, I'd pay 1,200 Baht)

We've tried using similar collars before and they were a complete waste of time and totally ineffective on my dog but they did only cost about 150 baht if I remember correctly.

So has anyone used this Seresto collar?

As always, any feedback much appreciated.

Our Golden has had one for a few weeks and still gets ticks.

Maybe it cuts down the numbers but she still gets them.

As you say expensive but you get so desperate you try anything.

We had massive problems with tics. Haven't seen one in months now. We hired a company to spray the yard every month and use Front Guard every month. We also don't let the dog roam around freely any more. Only in our yard.

I used a tick collar made by Bayer, but found it unsatisfactory because of the fastening system, but it didn't have that name. (about B.500)

Now I use Preventic, which costs B.275.

I think all these products help to keep the numbers of ticks down (fleas have never been a problem with my dogs), but do not keep them off completely.

So far this year I have only had the occasional tick (two dogs... two or three ticks a week in total), so the collars are waiting until the infestation arrives! One of the benefits of a drought!

Rather than use collars, we give our dogs Ex-Dex 4000 pills, one per month. The results are fantastic. We haven't seen a tick in over a year now and the number of fleas is significantly reduced. If we bathe our dogs regularly with anti-flea shampoo, they seem to be flea free. We buy the En-Dex 4000 from a dog supply company here in Thailand that we found on the internet. It's called Buddy Dog Shop. We buy 100 pills for 700 Baht. I highly recommend this treatment for all dogs rather than considering a flea and tick collar.

My 2 dogs, 80kgs, and 65kgs, have bi-monthly injections for ticks, fleas, and heart worm. Have been having them for the last 6 years, and never a tick or flea. Volume of injection determined by dogs weight, but total bill last visit was 480 baht. And, each visit they both get weighed, and checked over.

I used to used powdered sulphur (sulfur for the English challenged) mixed in with the food once a week.

Worked well on ticks and fleas.

That was for me though...not sure how the dogs went.

Just got over an infestation

I nearly tried everything on the shelf except for ringing in the local pest control guys

then I found Whisher powder (white tub with dark green cap) at Tesco I dust the dog and all his bedding I also mix up a batch and spray all the furniture and surrounds

My dog is 12 months old and never had any ticks until 3 weeks ago.

Then for the next 2 weeks I was removing 6 a day.

In reply to pinkpanther, my vet recommended the Seresto collar only last week. He only had 2 left and said the Thais won't pay that price so he sold me one for 350 baht. He's not had a tick since, but it's only been a week.

Maybe coincidence. Is there a particular time of year when the populous of ticks explodes?

My understanding is that Ex Dex is highly toxic if given over long periods - it's Ivermectin. I only use Frontline but this year have had to supplement it with a herbal tick spray on their feet 2 x daily before walks. This has been the worst year for ticks I can remember!

I would indeed go for the Ex-Dex 4000. I had a serious tick infestation, the dogs were full of them at one time it was so bad that I spent 3 hours per day to manually remove the ticks from my two dogs, every day. When in the morning I looked at the wall close to were my dogs are sleeping it was full of them hundreds, marching upwards. I made me crazy, I tried the collars, did not work, anti flee and tick shampoo, did not work. Then finally I found Ex-Dex 4000. The first month I gave the dogs a weekly doses. Now monthly. I still see some ticks now and then that are half dead, but never fully grown female ticks that lay eggs. It also helps to spray the dogs with Bayticol, this you can also use to keep the dogs sleeping place tick free.

The injections given at the vet is also Ivermectin, it is also used for dogs that have Demodex (Mange), there are certain races that are allergic to it like Border Collies.

Yes I do worry about the long term effects of giving the dog these injections each month.

Anyone ever tried any natural/home made treatments? I'm sceptical but a neighbour was telling me that citrus repels ticks. He mixes a solution of fresh lime juice and some zest with water and puts it into a spray bottle and sprays his dog each day. This guy said it wasn't perfect but pretty good at keeping ticks away.

I was also reading online about making a solution of 50/50 apple cider vinegar and water and spraying the dog with it each day.

Anyone tried this kind of thing or is just an old wives tale?

As one poster said earlier, u get that desperate you try anything!

That's a huge part of the problem. I use to have 3 big dogs when I lived in the they US. Fleas were all over them. Dealing with the yard was the only way to take care of this problem.

We give recommended doses of Ivermectin every month, one dog gets it twice a month. No harmful effects so far. Tick shampoo to all the dogs except one, (we have eight), it took us a long time to find out that she couldn't handle it. Very few ticks now, but it took us a year to work out what to do in our particular situation. They all get to run around the garden and socialise with the neighbours' dogs. They all get a check every day, especially the feet.

There is no magic solution to the problem but trial and error will get you there.

The only anti tick medication that works on our Doberman is Advocate. Once a month I put the drops behind her neck and along her back.

We used to use Frontline but it just doesnt work for her.

The collars worked a little, but Advocate keeps them off her totally.

There are several threads in this forum about dealing with fleas and ticks. One poster will swear by one solution, but it doesn't work for another.

I have had a bad infestation in the house I'm living in now. I used ivermectin (sometimes an injection, sometimes in tablet form (En-Dex), sprayed everywhere with Bayticol, and gave both my dogs Preventic collars. The ticks disappeared.

This year I have only had the occasional tick on the dogs. One dog goes for a long walk with me every morning through the rice paddies. So far, so good. I give En-Dex regularly, and check both dogs daily (the GSX is old, and rarely ventures outside my gate). I bought Preventic collars for them in February, but they are still in the packets.

Now the rainy season is starting, and I expect more ticks before long. Then I shall put the collars on.... and hope for the best.

everyone who reads and posts in this section will know ours caught an infection[low red cell blood count] that took about 10weeks of treatment from ticks.

we have an idea of where he got the infected tick from,but one thing we learnt was to spray the yard with termite spray once or twice a week.as he sleeps with us we do check him every night,this month there's only been a few[not the season?] we have just about tried everything but there's always a few.what makes it difficult also he has a double coat so as he loves a feel we have to be thorough.

something simular to a sheep dip would do the trick.

To spray the grounds would be futile as the forest also comes into play. Small black ones and then a much larger grey coloured type. I have been taking my dog to a local vet, who injects him but other than my dog hating him and wanting to bite his head off, it has not reduced the number of ticks.

My wife spends many hours each week, by hand, sometimes a couple of hundred at a time. Since the rain commenced they are even more prolific. The dog shows no sign of discomfort and has little, if any fleas but these bloody ticks, so many. Once removed they are squashed between tissue paper and I can see that they are all full of blood. I see some only get a few ticks, god I wish this was the case with my fella.

I've also tried a product sold by the pet shops, (B150) don't know the name and put it on the skin between the shoulders and also front line, which is very expensive at B2500 for 3 months but neither have worked. I wash him weekly with a tick and flea wash and also use a tick and flea powder but nothing seems to work. I am really at my wits end as I believe these things can give a dog a blood disease which can make them ill and even require blood transfusion

He's a 1 year old pedigree German Shepherd and being part of our family I have no problem in spending money in protecting him but I just can't find anything that works. I don't want him to be injected any more, as on every occasion, he reacts adversely to it, only through pain for a short period of time. I can see why he doesn't take to kindly to the vet. I will read every post and hope that someone has found a product that works, or at the very least, reduce these blighters significantly.

Is every month for 7 years a long period? That is what my Labrador has been given and she's full of life. Frontline FAILED to protect my Golden and she died from a tick related disease. Heard reports about FAKE Frontline too. Never heard about fake Ivermectin/EnDex.

Ivomectin is hard on the liver of older dogs.

Its a war with me and the tiny immature ticks....I have used everything and my dog has gotten tick parasite poisoning Three times....it is a huge problem. Need to get a test for it. looks like a pregnancy test strip. The parasite is in 50% of the ticks ....it ruins the kidneys over time.............

i to live in isaan right next to open land,back and side,but we get our property de-sectesided every yr.but if you are having that many on him get a blood test done every 6months.it was only by chance i saw ours sway as if he was drunk and he is me and the wife's boy so money doesnt come into it as long he is well.

the vet said we were lucky we got it early it is a silent killer.

Thanks for your advise. Maybe I should get everything sprayed and see if it works. May I ask who does the spraying of your land, I cannot for the life of me find anyone around where I live. And of course you need someone who will turn up and can trust. By the way I'm in Loei, arte you near here? i live on a mooban in korat not far from saveone night market.the co we use[6yrs] is AMERICAN PEST CONTROL[o44-352410] this time 2weeks ago the wife had them to mix a very strong solution and they treated under the house and all the garden 170sqw.

but one thing you must do is dont let the dog in the garden for at least 24hrs. if you do get a co.to do it make sure they break the seal on the bottle of chemical in front of you and pour it all in the barrel of water,that way they cant fiddle one bottle for two customers.yes they do do it.

The eggs will still survive even though you kill the tick.

The Thais tell me you must burn the tissues with the ticks, to destroy any eggs.
