Myanmar still on UN child-soldier list

RANGOON: -- Myanmar’s military is still included on a list of organisations recruiting child soldiers, despite efforts to end the practice, UN envoy Leila Zerrougui said at Unicef’s Yangon office.

The special representative of the secretary-general for children and armed conflicts said: “There are 58 groups that are currently listed in child-soldier cases. Out of 58, 50 are armed groups. Eight are nations and military groups representing governments. Among these countries, Myanmar is recruiting and using child soldiers.

“The countries which recruit children as soldiers are revealed and put on this embarrassing list,” she told the media. The other nations are Afghanistan, Chad, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Somalia, South Sudan, Sudan and Yemen. The UN says no under-18s should be recruited.
